ARGVMENTVM LIBRI. <p>DVm Cæsar fugientem Pompeium persequitur, ac in Ægyptum delatus cum Alexandrinis & eorum rege Ptolemæo bellum gerit; deinde contra Pharnacem per Syriam in Pontum proficiscitur, superstites Pompeii duces & ex clade Pharsalica profugi, nacti tempus & otium certatim in Africam contenderunt, Actii V ari copiis & Iubæ regis opibus confisi, quorum illu- striores fuere Q. Metellus Scipio, Pompeii socer, Petreius, Afranius, Torquatus, T. Labienus, Faustus Sylla, & præcipue M. Caro, cujus laudataque modestia fuit, quod ab omnibus belli dux electus, Scipioni Con- sulari viro Prætorius ipse eo munere & honore cedere maluerit. Sed male con- suluit patriaelig;, dum consulit famæ. Cum enim vir esset & melior & pru- dentior, bellare cum Cæsare potuit eventu meliore, si gradum retinuisset: Cæsar interim ex Ponto in Italiam regressus, compositis tumultibus vrbanis, & militum seditione missionem & præmia flagitantium, ne minus augerentur ho- stium vires metuens, non anni tempore, non religione moveri potuit, quo- minus moxin Africam trajiceret. Nam & immolanti cum aufugisset hostia, profectionem non distulit, & cum hyems esset, monerentque vates & augures, ne ante brumam trajiceret, constantissime trajecit, cessitque ea res felicis- sime. Hostes enim quantumlibet animis & armis instructos ingenti cæde profligavit, & ad vrbem reversus, non hujus tantum victoriæ, sed etiam superiorum hucusq; dilatos quatuor simul spectatissimos triumphos duxit, Gal- licum videlicet, Alexandrinum, Ponticum, & Africanum.
