Crassus adolescens cum legione VII 1proximus mare Oceanum Andibus hiemabat. Is, quod in his locis ino- pia frumenti erat,2præfectos, tribunosque militum complures in finiti- mas civitates, frumenti commeatusque petendi caussa, dimisit: quo in <N=5>numero erat T. Hujus civitatis <N=VIII.>est longe amplissima auctoritas omnis oræ maritimæ regionum earum, quod & naves habent Veneti plurimas, quibus in Britanniam navigare consue- verunt, & scientia atque vsu nauticarum rerum cæteros antecedunt,6& <N=10> in magno impetu maris, atque aperto, paucis portubus interjectis, quos tenent ipsi, omnes fere qui eodem mari vti consueverunt, habent vecti- gales. Ab iis fuit initium retinendi Silii atque Velanii, quod per eos suos se obsides, quos Crasso dedissent, recuperaturos existimabant. Horum auctoritate finitimi adducti (vt sunt Gallorum subita & repentina con- <N=15>silia) eadem de caussa Trebium Terrasidiumque retinent: & celeriter missis legatis, per suos principes inter se conjurant, nihil, nisi communi consilio, acturos, eundemque omnis fortunæ exitum esse laturos; reli- quasque civitates sollicitant, vt in ea libertate, quam a majoribus acce- perant, permanere, quam Romanorum servitutem perferre, mallent.
