Itaque ne id accideret, silvestri loco castris positis, e regione vnius eorum pontium, quos Vercingetorix rescindendos curaverat, postero die cum II legionibus in occulto restitit: reliquas copias cum omnibus im- pedimentis, vt consueverat, misit, 2 demptis [quartis] quibusque cohor- tibus, vti numerus legionum constare videretur. Iis quam longissime <N=10>possent progredi jussis, quum jam ex diei tempore conjecturam caperet, in castra perventum, iisdem sublicis, quarum pars inferior integra rema- nebat, pontem reficere cœpit. Celeriter effecto opere, legionibusque transductis, & loco castris idoneo delecto, reliquas copias revocavit. Ver- cingetorix re cognita, ne contra suam voluntatem dimicare cogeretur, magnis itineribus antecessit. 3 Cæsar ex eo loco quintis castris Gergoviam XXXVI. pervenit; equestrique prælio eo die levi facto, perspecto vrbis situ, quæ posita in altissimo monte omnes aditus difficiles habebat, de expugnatione desperavit: de obsessione non prius agendum constituit, quam rem fru- mentariam expedisset. 2 At Vercingetorix castris prope oppidum in monte <N=20>positis, mediocribus circum se intervallis, separatim singularum civitatum copias collocaverat : atque omnibus ejus jugi collibus occupatis, qua des- pici poterat, 4 horribilem speciem præbebat; principesque earum civita- tum, quos sibi ad consilium capiendum delegerat, prima luce ad se quo- tidie convenire jubebat, seu quid communicandum, seu quid admini- <N=25>strandum videretur : neque vllum fere diem intermittebat, quin eque- stri prælio interjectis sagittariis, quid in quoque esset animi ac virtutis suorum, periclitaretur. Erat e regione oppidi collis sub ipsis radicibus montis egregie munitus, atque ex omni parte circumcisus: quem si te- nerent nostri, & aquæ magna parte, & pabulatione libera prohibituri <N=30>hostes videbantur. Sed is locus præsidio ab iis non nimis firmo teneba- tur: tamen silentio noctis Cæsar ex castris egressus, prius quam subsi- dium ex oppido venire posset, dejecto præsidio, potitus loco, duas ibi legiones collocavit, fossamque duplicem duodenum pedum a majoribus castris |
