Show <pn 430> A. HIRTII A. HIRTII COMMENTARIORVM DE BELLO HISPANIENSI LIBER VNVS. ARGVMENTVM LIBRI. <p>DE hujus libri autore valde dubitatur, nec sine causa. Quamquam enim Suetonius in Cæsaris vita, Librorum seu Commentariorum belli Alexandrini, Africique, & Hispaniensis incertum autorem esse scripserit, quem alii Oppium, alii Hirtium putent, tamen tam diversa styli ratio est hujus libri a superioribus qui de bello Alexandrino, Africoque conscripti sunt, vt ab vno eodemque homine scriptos esse credere non liceat. Vix- que fides fit hominem Romanum tam male potuisse scribere. Nec enim putetur autor Oppius, cujus apud Ciceronem epistolæ extant aliquot nihil hanc barbariem redolentes, potiusque existimem peregrinum aliquem cen- turionem, aut tribunum Cæsarianarum partium eum fuisse commentum, (nam Cæsar de omnibus gentibus collectos milites habuit.) Sed si conjectu- ræ relinquitur locus, neque Germanus, neque Gallus, sed aut Syrus, aut Afer, aut de gente aliqua orientalibus accensenda, cujus dialectus aut Syriaca, aut Syriacæ finitima. Præterea stigmatias, vbique deformis, nec vllus est liber cicatricosior, quique plura vulnera a vetustate acceperit, vt nibil mirer quod a Glandorpio scriptum est, plerosque omnes interpretes ejus subterfugere solere enarrationem. <p>Hic liber complectitur vltimum Cæsaris bellum, quod ab eo contra Pom- peianorum duoum reliquias in Hispania gestum est, & ab illa provincia Hispaniense dictum. Quia vero liber & ab initio & a fine mutilus, operæ pretium videtur esse, vnde bellum illud ortum sit, explicare. Bellum igitur Hispaniense ex ea seditione quam Q. Cassii concitavit avaritia & rapa- citas ortum habuit. Cum enim vererentur civitates ne rerum per tumultum gestarum victori Cæsari pœnas darent, clam datis ad Scipionem in Afri- cam litteris, ad illus partes se adjunxerunt, quibus ille cum quosdam ex suis tum Cn. Pompeium filium misit, quo duce res gereretur. Verum circa Baleares insulas paulo diutius morante Pompeio, victoque interea Scipione, cum fama ferret cum classe Didium a Casare missum adventare, T. Sca- pulam & Q. Aponium equestris ambos ordinis duces legerunt, a quibus illico |
