Valerio Donotauro Caburi filio principe civitatis, compluribusque aliis interfectis, intra oppida murosque compelluntur. Allobroges, crebris ad <N=5>Rhodanum dispositis præsidiis, magna cum cura & diligentia, suos fines tuentur. 2 Cæsar, quod hostes equitatu superiores esse intelligebat, &, in- terclusis omnibus itineribus, nulla re ex Provincia atque Italia sublevari po- terat, trans Rhenum in Germaniam mittit ad eas civitates, quas superio- ribus annis pacaverat; 3 equitesque ab his accersit, & levis armaturæ pe- <N=10>dites qui inter eos præliari consueverant. Eorum adventu, quod minus idoneis equis vtebantur, a trib. mil. reliquisque, sed & equitibus Roma- <N=LXVI.>nis, atque 4 evocatis, equos sumit, Germanisque distribuit. Interea dum hæc geruntur, hostium copiæ ex Arvernis, equitesque, qui toti Gal- liæ erant imperati, conveniunt. Magno horum coacto numero, quum <N=15>Cæsar in Sequanos per extremos Lingonum fines iter faceret, quo faci- lius subsidium Provinciæ ferri posset, circiter millia passuum X ab Roma- nis trinis castris Vercingetorix consedit; convocatisque ad concilium præ- fectis equitum, venisse tempus victoriæ demonstrat: fugere in Provin- ciam Romanos, Galliaque excedere: id sibi ad præsentem obtinendam <N=20>libertatem satis esse: ad reliqui temporis pacem atque otium parum pro- fici. Majoribus enim coactis copiis reversuros, neque finem bellandi fa- cturos: proinde, agmine impeditos adoriantur: si pedites suis auxilium ferant, atque in eo morentur, iter confici non posse: sin id quod ma- gis futurum confidat, relictis impedimentis, suæ saluti consulant, & vsu <N=25>rerum necessariarum, & dignitate spoliatum iri. Nam de equitibus ho- stium, quin nemo eorum progredi modo extra agmen audeat, ne ipsos quidem debere dubitare. Id quo majore faciant animo, copias se omnes pro castris habiturum, & terrori hostibus futurum. Conclamant, equi- tes sanctissimo jurejurando confirmari oportere, ne tecto recipiatur, ne <N=30>ad liberos, ne ad parentes, ne ad vxorem aditum habeat, qui non bis <N=LXVII.>per hostium agmen perequitasset. Probata re, atque omnibus ad jus- jurandum adactis, postero die in tres partes distributo equitatu, duæ se acies a duobus lateribus ostendunt: vna a primo agmine iter impedire cœpit. |
