PHOENIX • T HE male and female :flowers ate on diftinct plants, or on the fame fpadix. In the male flowers, the general fpatha is compofite: the fpadix is ramofe: the corolla is deeply divided into three hollow, oval fegments: the .fiamina are three flender filaments : the antherre are fhort. In the female flowers, the calyx is the fame as in the male : the corolla is divided into three principal fegments, with as many very fmall lacinire, externally and internally: the germen is roundilh; the fiyle is fubulated and fhort; the fiigma is acute: the fruit is an oval berry, having only one cell, and in that a fingle, offeous feed, of a fuboval figure, with a longitudinal furr()w, fi.Jcenix Jrondibus pinnatis, folio/is alternis enjl-formibus, baji complanatis, petiolis comprejjis doifo rotundatis. The root confills of a long and thick body,· penetrating deep Into the earth, and of' a multitude of ramifications, running jull: under the furface : the trunk is !trait, fimple, ~nd undivided : the tree grows to a ~onfiderable height : the leaves all grow in a kind of clull:er at the top; they are from fixty to eighty in number, and are beautifully difpofed in a circular manner; in the midll: there fiands a conic body, formed of a clufier of yet unexpanded leaves; around this fiand numbers of leaves, not yet perfeCtly [eparated; below thefe, others more· perfettly difingaged, and fo on to the lowefi; the whole head, formed by all thefe, is very large and very beautiful, the lowell: of them fianding not parallel, but making a kind of arch with their pedides; they are very large, and pinnated; the pinnre are very long, harrow, and of a deep green colour, refembling in figure the leaves of reeds; and the rib appears fpinofe, but the fpines are no other than the rudiments of leaves: the male fpadix is large, ramofe, and contains a vafi number of flowers; they are fmall, and of a yellowifh-white colour: the female flowers are fmaiJ, and alfo very numerous; they are fucceeded by the fruit, which is the Date of the fhops. It is a native of both the Eall: and Weft Indies. C. Bauhine calls it, Palma major; others, Palma daCl:ylifera major. CdRYPHA.
