T HE calyx of the Catefbrea is a very fmall perianthium, quad.ridentated, acu.te, and permanent. The corolla confifts o.f a fingl7 petal, and JS of a funnel-like {hape : the tube is moft remarkably long, ftra1t, and th1cker upwards than at the bafe: the limb is broad, lightly divided into four fegments, and eretlo-plane : the fiamma are four filaments, fituate bwithin the tube of the corolla: t~e anthe:re are oblong, ereCt, and reach to the extremity of the corolla : the germen IS round1ili, and. place~ below the calyx; the Jlyle is filiform, and of the l~ngth of the corolla : the fi1gma IS t1mple : the pericarpium is an oval, coronated, umlocular berry : the feeds are nume-rous and angular. This {hrub is defcribed by the late Mr Mark Catefby, fi·om whom it is named, un-der the name of Lycium. I }( () It 1\. T HE calyx of the Ixora is a very fmall perianthium, quadridentated, ereCt, and permanent. The corolla confifts of a fingle petal; the tube is cylindric, very long and flender: the limb is plane, and divided into four oval fegments: the fiamina are four filaments fituate in the divifions of the corolla; they are very !hort and crooked ; the anth~rre are oblong : the germen is roundi{h ; the ftyle is filiform, and of the length of the tube ; the ftigma is bifid ! the fruit is a berry of a roundifh figure, with only one cell : the feeds are four 111 number, convex on one fide, and angular on the other. There is but one fpecies of this genus, which is defcribed in the fecond volume of the Hortus Malabaricus, T. 13, I 4· A V ICE N N A. T HE calyx of the Avicenna is a perianthium, confifting of one leaf, divided into five fegments, acuminated, erefr, and permanent. The corolla confifis of a fingle petal, and is plane, and divided into four ovate-acuminated fegments : the fiamina are four fubulated filaments, !horter than the corolla ; the antherre are bifid. The germen is oval ; the fiyle is fubulated, !hort, and permanent: the ftigma is acute. The perianthium is a coriaceous capfule, oval, but terminating in a point, containing only one cell, and not fplitting open : the feed is fingle, compre1fed, and of an elliptic figure, and germinates within the pericarpium. There is but one known fpecies of this genus, which is defcribed in the fourth vo .. lume of the Hortus Malabaricus, F. 45· P E N lE J\. T H E calyx of the Penrea is a perianthium, confifting of two leaves ; thefe are hollow, equal, coloured, of a lanceolated figure, placed oppofite to one another, lax, deciduous, and but of about half the length of the corolla. The corolla confifts of a fingle petal, and is of the campanulated kind : the limb is much !horter than the tube, and is patulous, and divided into four acute fegments : the il:amina are four very !hort filaments, and are affixed to the tube of the corolla, between the fegments, and are ere~ and naked : the antherre are erect, plane, and emarginated at each end : the germen JS of .an ~val figure, but quadragonal: the fiyle is r.endered quadrangular alfo by four longttudmal, membra!1a~eous alre affixed to it : the ftigma is cruciform, obtufe, an~ p~r~anent. The frutt ts a quadragonal capfule, with it's fiyle remaining ~ffixed to 1t ~ It 1s formed of four valves, and contains four cells. The feeds are two tn each cell, and are oblong and obtufe.
