Jc is common with us about watery places. C. Bauhine calls it, Tuffilago vulgaris. It is efieemed a petl:oral, and is frequently ufed in decotl:ions. 2. Tu.!Jilago fcapo im!Jricato thyrfifero, jlofculis omnibus hermaphroditis. The imbricated-.ftalked, thyrjiferous Tu.Jlilago, with all the flowers hermaphrodite. ll5utter~ bur. This fpecies agrees with the former, in the fingularity of the flowers appearing early in the fpring, before the leaves: the fialks on which thefe ftand are eight or ten inches high, firiated, thick, tender, and furnilhed with a number of fquamm:£, refembling leaves : the flowers are fmall, and of a flefl1 colour; they fiand in clufiers, and form a kind of fpike at the top: the leaves are two feet in diameter, roundiih, and of a pale green colour : the root is large, creeping, and fibrated. It is frequent in watery places. C. Bauhine calls it, Petafites major et vulgaris. The other fpecies are, 1. The Tuffilago, with {hut flowers, called Anandria. 2. T H E receptacle is naked ; the down is capillary . the radii of the flofcules have filaments without antherre annexed to them. , • Of .this genus there is but one known fpecies: it is an /Ethiopian; the leaves are pmnattfid, and the flowers yellow. HELENIA. T HE receptacle is naked; the down has a little cup, with five indentings i the _calyx of the flower is fimple, and formed of a number of leaves. . Thts genus comprehends the Heleniaftrum of Vaillant and others, · Helenia foliis decurrentibus. It 1~ a native of North America. Vaillant calls it, Helenia!lrum folio longiore et angufhore; others, After luteus alatus, and Afl:er floridanus aureus caule alate. The other fpecies are, I. H E receptacle is naked; the down is arifi:ated; the calyx is tubulous, and is formed of a fingle leaf, divided into five fegments at the end : the radii of the flowers are five. I. Tbe di./fttfi, fubdivided-.ftalked Tagetes. jfttncb ~arpgolb~ The root is compofed of a tuft of fibres: the fi:alk is firiated, flender, ramofe, ditfufe, and two or three feet high: the leaves are large, oblong, pinnated, and of a dark ween colour : the flowers fiand on the extremities of the branches ; they are moderately large, and yellow toward the center, but of a very dark colour elfewhere. It is a native of M.exico, but is common in our gardens. C. Bauhine calls it, Tanacetum Africanum, five Flos Africanus minor; others, Tagetes minor. There are feveral varieties of this fpecies from culture, which are defcribed by fame authors as difi:intl: fpecies. 2. 7agetes caule Jimplici ereElo, pedunculis nudis unij/ oris. The Jimple, ereEl-}Jalked T'agetes, with flowers on long pedicles. ~frican ~arpgolll. The root is fibrous: the fialk is .firiated, ereCt, hollow, and two or three feet high ~ the leaves are large, oblong, pinnated, and of a pale green colour : the flowers fiand fingly, on long, ereCt pedicles; they are large, and throughout of a pale yellow colour. Culture makes many varieties in this fpecies, as the double-flowered, &c. which many authors have defcribed as fo many fpecies. It is a native of Mexico. C.
