The leaves fiand three together, fupportea on lbng, fmooth pedicles, and each has alfo it's own pedicle ; they are of an oblong figure, broad, approaching to oval; but pointed at the end, ufually finuated, more or lefs deeply, but fometimes entire, and always more or lefs hoary. The flowers are fmall and whitiih. It is a native of Virginia. Tourrtefort calls it, Toxicodendron triphyllum folio fi-nuato pubefcente. 4· Rhus foliis pinnatis integerrimis. 'l'he Rhus, with pinnated, undivided leaves. 3tbe 1tet::: nttl) 3ttet. The root is woody, brachiated and fibrated: the bark is a deep brown and fmooth , on the younger branches often reddi!h. The leaves are compofed of a double feries of oblong, pointed pinnre, of a du.£ky green colour, fmooth, and even at the edges. The flower is fmall, the fruit rhomboidal: the whole abounds with a milky, poifonous juice. It is a native of China, and alfo of Virginia; we have it in our gardens. Plukenet calls it, Arbor Americana alatis foliis fucco lacteo venenato; Krempfer calls it, Sitz vel Sitzdfin ; verniih is the produce of it. The other fpecies are, 1. The elm-leaved Rhus. 2. The broader-leaved Rhus. 3· The narrower-leaved Rhus, fmooth on both fides. 4• The fmooth, trifoliate Rhus, or Toxicodendron. C 0 T I N U S. THE calyx is a !hort perianthium, divided into five ova], obtufe fegments: the corolla confifis of five oval petals, fcarce any larger than the cup : the fiamina are five very minute filaments : the anthera~ are fmall; the germen is triquetrous ; the ftyles are three, and fmall; the fiigmata are obtufe: the fruit is an oval berry, with only one celi; the feed is fingle, and triangular. Of this genus there is only one known fpecies. Linnreus, in his late works, refers it to the Rhus, but it is fufficiently difiinct. C. 0 T I N U S. This rifes to a fmall tree. It's root is woody, brachiated, and fibrated : the trunk is covered with a brown bark. The leaves are roundifh, or oval, and fiand fingly on long pedicles ; they are an inch and a half long, and of a pale green colour; their pedicles are red, and, towa-rd the end of fummer, the leaves become red too. The tops of the brandies fuffain a kind of tufts, formed of an infinite number of hairy, or cirrated, long, complex filaments, together forming a tuft of three or four inches in diameter, and of a purpliih colour ; the flowers fiand in this, and are fmall, and of a yellowifh· green eolour, the feeds reddifh. lt is. a native of Italy. J. Bauhine calls it, Cotinus, five Coccygria ; C. Bauhine, Cocconilea, five Coccigrya. C A S S IN E. T HE flowers form a decompound umbel : the perianthium is very fma11, thick at the bafe, divided into five parts, obtufe and permanent: the corolla is formed of a fingle petal, divided into five fuboval, obtufe, patent fegments, larger than the cup : the fiamina are five fubulated, patent fil aments, lhorter than the corolla: the anther::e are fimple; the germen is conic; there is no fiyle; the fiigmata are three, reflex and obtufe: the fruit is a roundifh berry, with three cells ; the feeds are fingle an? oval. Linnreus h.as, of late, joined the maurocenia to this genus ; they are nearly all!ed, but have ~ifiinction enough to keep them properly feparate. Dillenius makes thts lhrub a fpecJes of phyllerea.
