The root is tuberous, of the bignefs of an orange, greyilh on . the outfide? green within, and covered with a multitude of protuberances. T.h~ rad~calleaves nfe to a foot, or more, jn height : the pedicles are long, and ar~ dtvtded mto three parts, on each of which there fl:ancl two or three leaves, of a roundifh .figure, fome mo~e, fome lefs, indented and jagged round the edges; they are _full of .nbs, and of a blta t ~ -wee? colour. T HERE is no calyx ; the corolla is fmooth, of a campanulated form, and com.: pofed of a fingle petal, divided at the extremity into fix ihort, obtufe, patentireflex fegments. The ftamina are fix fubulated filaments, inferted into the petal, and ihorter than it : the antherre ate oblong and ereCt ; the germen is globofe ; the il:yle is filiform, and longer than the ftamina: the ftigma is obtufe and trigonal: the fruit is a globofe berry, containing three cells, and is fpotted, before it is ripe: the feeds are lingle and roundilli. ' This genus comprehends the Lilium Convallium, the Polygonatum, and the Unifolium of authors. In all thefe the berry, before it is ripe, is fpotted. In the Lilium Convallium, the corolla is globofe, campanulated, artd patent; in the Polygonatum, the corolla is tubulato-carnpanulated; in the Unifulium, a third part of all the frueti. ficinions is wanting: and, finally, fame of the fpecies of fmilax of Tournefort are included in this genus, in which the corolla is divided into fix very acute and patent fegments. I. Convallaria flapo nudo. The naked-.flalked Gonvallaria. 1Ltlp of tbe ttaucp. The root is oblong, flender, and white, and creeps under the furface; from this rife ufually two, fometimes three, leaves~ they are fix inches long, two broad, and of a deep green ; they are fmall at the bafe, largefi: in the middle, and pointed at the end. The ftalk is naked, flender, angulated, and fix inches high; from it's middle to the top ftand the flowers in a fingle feries, placed one way, and dependent; they are fmall, white, and of an extreamly ·fragrant fmell. It is a native of our woods, and is frequent alfo in gardens. C. Bauhine. &c. call it, Liliurn Convallium. 2. Convallaria Joliis alternisj/ori!Jus, ex a/is. .§Dolonton'.S The alternate-leaved Convallaria, with flowers jro1n the alee. ~cal. The root is oblong, white, creeping, jointed and fibrated. The fialk is round, green, £lender, but firm, and two feet high; it is naked toward the bottom, but toward the top it bends downward, and is all along that part thick-fet with alternate leaves.~ The Hi}lory of P L A N T S, leaves two inches long, an inch broad, and nervous. The flowers are numerous, fmall,' oblong, tubular, and white; they have !hart pedicles, fometimes fimple, fometimes ramofe. It is a native of our woods. C. Bauhine calls it, Polygonatum latifolium vulgare. It varies extreamly in the fize of the leaves and flowers, and thefe varieties have been defcribed as difiinCl: fpecies, by authors, under the names of Polygonatum latifolium maximum, and Polygonatum latifolium flore majore odoro. The root is a famous vulnerary, and is applied in form of a cataplafm to contu~o~~ 3. Convallaria foliis verticillatiJ. 'Ihe verticillate-leaved Convallaria. Jflattolli;::feabctt ~olotnon's ~tal. The root is oblong, flender, white, and jointed~ the fi:alk is angulated, flender, and a foot and half high : the leaves are fmall and narrow; they ftand .four or five at a joint furrounding the fi:alk in a verticillate manner, and are of a blu101-green, and fmooth; the flowers fi:and round the ftalks in the fame manner, and are fmall, and of a greenilh-white. It is a native of Sweden and Germany. C. Bauhine calls it, Polygonatum angufti .. folium; Dodonreus) Polygonatum alterum. 4· Convallaria foliis cordatis The cordated-leaved Convallaria. The root is ilender and creeping ; the radical leaf is ufually fingle, of a cordated form three quarters of an inch long, half an inch broad, and placed on a flend~r pedicle' of three or four inches in length: the fialk is flender, green, and four mches high, and has fometimes only one, but. more ufually two, fometimes three leaves on it, like the radical one in figure, and hairy underneath ; at the top ftands a clu.fier of little, white, fweet-fcented flowers. . It is a native of Germany, and many other parts of Europe: ?erard a~d Parkmfon pretend to have foun~ it in ~ngland, but fal~ely: C. T H E R E is no calyx ; the corolla is of a campanulated fhape, and is ~ormed of a fingle petal: the limb is divided into fix reflex fegments; the nectanum confifts of three pores or cavities, filled with a honey juice, and fituated at the top ?f the germen : the fi:amina are fix ihort, fubulated .filaments; the antherre are conmvent : the germen is roundilh, but trigonal, and marked wit,h three furrows : the ftyle is fim· pie, and lhorter than the corolla; the fi:igma is obtuf~ :. the fruit is a roundi{h capfule, triquetrous, formed of three valves, and contammg three cells : the feeds are roundi01, ufually two in each cell ; the receptacle is columnar. This genus comprehends the Hyacinthus and M?fcari of autho~s :. in. t~e Hyacinth of authors, the corolla is oblong and tubulated ; 111 the Mufcan, It IS mflated and globofe. 1.
