Tbe jhort-leaved Sifeli, with jhort, linear figments. l!Dutcb ~a~tfragz. The root is oblong, £lender, and yellowifh, or white. The leaves are compofed of a multitude of lhort, narrow, linear fegments ; the top of the root is corona ted with a tuft of hairy matter, from the fibres of decayed leaves. The .ftalk is £lender, and fcarce ereCt, .ftriated, a foot high, and furnifhed with a few leaves, finely divided, but fmall. The umbels are moderately large, the flowers fmall, fometimes yellowifh, of-ten white. It is common in Germany and Holland. Morifon calls it, Saxifraga montana minor multifido folio ; C. Bauhine, Daucus montanus multifido folio. 2. Sefeli foliis longioribus, fegmentis longiufculis angujliflimis. Tbe longer-leaved Sefeli, with very narrow~ l~ng figme71,ts. The root is long, £lender, capillated at the top, black on the furface, and white within. The leaves are long, and divided into a multitude of long, and very narrow, fegments, and are of a pale green colour. The .ftalk is round, flender, '.ftriated, a foot and a half high, and ramofe. The umbels are fmall, the flowers white. It is frequent in mofi parts of Europe. C. Bauhine calls it, Thapfia freniculi folio. The other fpecies are, 1. The lhort-leaved Sefeli, called broad-leaved Meum. 2. The long, glaucous-leaved Sefeli) called Mountain Saxifrage. 3· The large-leaved yellow-flowered Sefeli. The root is thick, ?blong, o~lique, and rough on the furface, furniilied with large .fibres, and of an acnd, aro~attc tafie, brown on the outfide, white within. The leaves are ternate, or three JOmed together, as fo many lobes on each pedicle and each of them is again divided into three fegments ; they are large, of a deep gree~1 colour, and ferrated .at the edges. The ftalk is round, firiated, jointed, ramofe, and two ~r three. feet htgh. The .umbels are moderately large; the flowers white. T HAPS I A. ~HE general umbel is large, formed of about twenty radii, all nearly of equa1 1 length ; the partial umbels confifi: of as many nearly equal rays; neither have any involucra: the perianthium is fcarce obfervable: the general corolla is uniform; the fingle flowers confifi each of five crooked, lanceolated petals : the .ftamina are five capillary filaments, of the length of the corolla: the antherre are fimple; the germen is oblong, and placed under the cup: the fl:yles are two, and fhort: the fiigmata an; obtufe : the fruit is naked, oblo.ng, furrounded longitudinally with a membrane, and feparable into two parts : the feeds are two, large, oblong, convex, pointed at ea,ch end, and have on each fide a plane margin, large, and undivided, which is emargi-nated at top and bottom. 1. Thapjia foliis lanuginojis i?t figment a linearia divijis, umbel/is latis. The 'Thapjia, with lanuginous leaves, divided into linear figments, with . . broad umbels. The root is long and thick, c01·onated with a tuft of fibrous matter at top, blackilh on the outfide, white within, and full of an acrid, milky juice. The leaves are large, divided into long, and fomewhat broad, linear fegments, pointed at the extremities, and of a pale green colour, covered with a light, downy matter. The .ftalk is round, ftriated, jointed, and hollow: the umbels are very large, and the flowers yellow. It is a native of Spain and Portugal. C. Bauhine calls it, Thapfia latifolia villofa,; others, Thapfia flore luteo, folio lato. 2. Thapjia Joliis glutinojis, umbel/is Jubglobojis. The glutinous-leaved Thapjia, with fubglobofe umbels. The root is oblong, very thick, brittle, blackifh on the furface, white within, and full of a white, acrid juice. The leaves are large, and divided into fomewhat broad fegments, and are continually covered with a glutinous, liquid matter. The .ftalk rifes to two feet high; it is round, .ftriated, £lender, and ramofe: the umbels are moderately large, and arched, fo that they approach to a globofe figure : the flowers are yellow • It is a native of Spain. C. Bauhine calls it, Thapfia foliis Libanotidis fretidiffima. The other fpecies are, 1. The fmallage-leaved, fiinking Thapfia. 2. The narrowleaved Thapfia, called Panax afclepium. 3· The Thapfia with very broad feeds. 4· The white-flowered, lucid-leaved Thapfia. The roots of all the fpecies are violently purgative, and unfafe medicines. PAST IN A CA.
