Of this order there is only one genus, and of that but one known Jpecies. MY 0 SUR 0 S. T HE calyx is a deciduous per~a?thium, compofed of five femi-Ian~eolate, obtufe, reflex, coloured leaves, Jmned on above the b~fe: the corolla I~ confiderabl fmaller than the calyx; it confifh of five extrea~ly rmnute petals, and JS tabulated a/the bafe, and opens obliquely inwards: the .fiamma are ~ve filaments, of the length of the cup ; the antherre are ereCt and oblong; the germma are very nl!merous, and are placed on the receptacle in ~orm of a. coni~, oblong clufier ; t~ere are no fiyles : the fiigmata are fimple; there JS n? ~enca~p1u~ : the receptacle IS extreamly long, fiyliform, and covered with feeds, latd m an Imbncated manner: the feeds are nume-rous, oblong, and acuminated.. . . . . . This genus has a great affimty w1th the .Ranunculu~, but cannot be.Jomed ~1th 1t. The number of the fiamina is not certam, but vanes confiderably m the d1fferent plants. My 0 suR 0 s. The root is compofed of a number of white, flender fibres; the leaves are very nu .. merous three inches long, very narrow, of a deep green, and fomewhat broader toward the ends than at the bafe: the fl:alks are fimple, two inches high, round, green, and flendet : the fl.dwer is of a greenifh colour; the antherre are yellow : the receptacle is a green, cylindric body,· two inches long, thicker than the ftalk, and beautifully im~ bticated in it's ftrueture. It is common with us among corn, and in dry paftures. C. Bauhine calls it, Myo~ foros; Dodonreus, Cauda murina. Clqfs 'the Sixth. HEXANDRlA. P !ants which have in every flower fix jlamina. THE genera of this order are very numerous, and may be arranged, according to_ certain obvious and invariable difiinetions, into five feveral divifions. Some of them having, I. Calyculated flowers, divided into three fegments. 2. Others having a monophyllous fpatha. 3· Others having flowers compofed of fix petals, and naked. 4· Others having flowers confifiing only of one petal, and naked; and, 5· Others having flowers not divided into three fegments, yet having cups to them. T HE calyx is a finall trigonal perianthium, divided into three oval fegments, placed on the germen, and permanent. The corolla confifts of three narrow, lanceolate, ereCt petals, much longer than the cup : the nettarium is connivent and affixed to every petal above it's bafe : the ftamina are fix fubulated filaments .. fuorter than the corolla, and inferted into the ~up : the antherre are erect, and fagittated; the germen ftands below the cup; the ftyle IS fimple and filiform, of the length of the ftamina; the ftigma is obtufe and trifid: the fruit is a large, roundifh, umbilicated berry : the feeds are numerous, incumbent, oblong, and obtl:lfe. This genus comprehends the Pinguin of Dillenius, the Ananas of Tournefort, and the Karotas of Plumier, the pine-apples of our ftoves. T I L L A N D S I A. T HE calyx is an oblong, tripartite, ereCl:, permanent perianthium, formed of one leaf; the fegments are oblong, Janceolated, and acuminated: the corolla is compofed of a fingle petal, and is tabulated : the tube is long and ventricofe; the limb is fmall, ereCt, trifid, and obtufe : the ftamina are fix filaments, of the length of the tube of the corolla, and adhere' longitudinally to the petal: the antherce are ereCl: and acute, and are placed in. the .neck of the corolla: the germen is oblong, and pointed at each end; the ftyle ts filiform, and of the length of the ftamina ; the ftigma is trifid and obtufe: the fruit is a long, obtufely, trigonal, acuminated capfule formed of three valves, but containing only one cell : the feeds are numerous, and a;e affixed to a long capillary plume. This genus comprehends the Caraguata of Plumier. RENE ALMIA. T HE calyx is a deciduous pe.rianthium, compofed of three coloured, oval, erect, hollow leaves: the corolla IS long, ereCl:, and of the infundibuliform kind . th tube is of the lengt~ of the calyx; the limb is fhort, plane, and divided into ~hre~ fegments: the ftamma are fix !hort membranaceous filaments, inferted into the corolla: the anth~rre are fagittated; the germen is ovato-oblong, rounded, pointed at the end, marked Wtth three furrows formed of three valves, and contains three cells. The feeds are numerous, oblong, and have each a capillary plume. It is a native of South America, defcribed by Plumier. BURMANNIA.· T HE calyx is a perianthium, formed of a fingle leaf, long, cylindric coloured and edged longitudinally with a triple, membranaceous ala. The modth is fmall' an.d divided into three fegments: the ~orolla is very fmall; it confifts of three extreamly mmute,. oval, oblong petals, placed m the mouth of the cup: the ftamina are fix fcarce v1fible filaments : the antherre are very fhort; they fiand in the mouth of the cup, two together, and are crooked at the extremity: the germen is cylindric and of about half t~e length of the cup; the fiyle is filiform, ~Dd of the length of' the corolla ; the ft1~mata are t1.1ree, obtufe and hollow~ the pencarpium is an involuted capfule, of ~ cylmdraceo-tngonal figure, formed of three valves, containing three cells, and openmg at the angles : the feeds are numerous and fmall. . It is a native of Ceylon, and is figured in Burman's Thefaurus 20. 1. TRADES- |
