C R IN U M. · T HE calyx is a fpathiform, general involucrum, compofed of tW_? oblo~g leaves, which bend downward, after it opens, and expofe to light a kmd of_lmle umbel : the corolla is infundibuliform, and confifis of a lingle petal; the tube IS oblong, cylindric, and bent; the limb is divided into fi~ !anc~olato-lmear, ob_tufe, concave, reflex fegments, three · of which alternately a~e dtfimgmibed by an uncma~ed appendage. The fiamina are fix fubulated filaments, anfing from the bafe of th.e hm~ ; they are of the length of the limb, ~nd conniv~nt: the antherre are oblong, hnear, mc~mbent, and affurgent : the germen 1s pla~ed m the ~otto~ of. the corolla; the !l:yle IS fubu.lated, and iborter than the 'fiamma ; the fi1gma 1s tnfid, and very fmall : the frmt is a capfule of a fuboval figure, with three c~lls ; the fe~ds are numerous. . Of this genus there is only one known fpec1es, and th1s has been ufually called a LI-lioafphodelus by authors. C R IN- U M. The root is a large tunicated bulb ; the lea~es are fix or eight ~nches long, half a~ inch broad, and of a bluifh-green, and remam green all .the wtnter. The fialk IS round, green, fucculen t, thick, naked, and . near a foot htgh : the flowers are large and white, and fiand ten or fifteen together m a clufter, at the top of the ftalk. It is a native of America. Commelin calls it, Lilioafphodelus Americanus fempervirens minor alb us. We have it in fome of our gardens. B U L B 0 C 0 D I U M. T HERE is no calyx; the corolla is of a funnel-like ihape, and is formed of fix petals. The ungues are very long and linear ; the bractere are connec:ted at the mouth, and the limb is erect and formed of the braClere, become of a lanceolated figure, and concave. The fiamina are fix fubulated filaments, of but half the .length of the limb; they are inferted into the neck of the corolla: the antherre are J~cu~bent: the germen is in figure ovato-fubulated, · and obtufely trigonal : the ftyle IS fillform, of the length of the ftamina : the fiigmata are three, oblong, ereCl, and furrowed: the fruit is a triangular, acuminated capfule, containing three cells : the feeds are numerous. T H E calyx is a common fpatha, of a roundifh figure, terminating in a long point, and deciduous·: the coroll~ confifts of .fix oblqng, narrow, comato-ereet petals : the fiamina are fix fubulated filaments, of the length of the corolla : the an. therre are oblong and erec:t; the germen is lbo(t and trigohal, with a line on .every· angle : the fiyle is fimple ; the fiigma is acute : the fruit is a very lhor't, broad capfule, of a trilobated figure, confifting of three valves, and containihg three cells : thb feeds are numerous, and of a roundiih figure. · This genus comprehends the Allium and the Moly of authors, and the Cepa and Porrum of Linn~us, in his Genera Plantarum. 1. Allium caule planifolio bulbifero, radice compojita, .ftami-nibus tricufpidatis. €:onuuoti The planifolious, bulbiferous-.ftalhed Allium, with a compound <IDatlttk. root, and three-pointed jlamina. 1 • The root is a com polite bulb, of the bignefs of a l;en's egg, formed of a number of fmaller bulbs, furtounded by a common membrane, acrid to the tafie, and of a very ftrong fmell. The leaves are numerous, a foot and a half long, narrow and thin. The fialk is round, fmooth, naked, hollow, and two or three feet high. The flowers are fmall and whitiih, but they fiand in a very large clufier, at the top of the fialk. . , It is a :native of Sicily ; we have it in all our gardens. C. Bauhinr and otqers call it, Allium fativum. It's root is ufed in the lhops as an aperient and diuretic; a fyrup of it is excellent in afthma's,. anp other diforders of the breafi, arifing from a tough; Jifcid phlegm~ , · ~ .
