T H E ~alyx is a fpatha, emulating the figure of a perianthiu'?; it is large, form~ ,ed oL dvee valves, of an oval figure, and hollowed, and IS conca~o -e rcC! and deciduous : the corolla confifts of nine hollow, rounded petals, folded or pltcated at the rim• and fmnller than the cup : the fiamina are about twenty very lhort filaments ; the 'anthcrre are oblong and large; the germen is roundilh ; there is no ~y.le: the fiigma is obtufe and pllcated : the fruit is a capfule ·of an oval figure, cont.ammg only one cell, and crowned with the fiigma: the fc:eds are numerous and roundifb, and there-ceptacle free. This genus comprehends the Anapodophyllon of authors. There is but one known fpecies of it. p 0 D 0 P H Y L L U M. , II The root is white, fucculent, and tuberculous; ti1e fialk rifes _lingle to fix inches high, and there divides into two parts, of ~hre~ or four in~h~s l01~g each ; on each of thefe ftands a large, fingle leaf, of a round1lh figure, bu~ d1v1ded mto fix parts, of the breadth of a man's hand, or more: the flowers fiand fingly between the two branches of the fialks, on a pedicle of half an ine.h long; before it is open, it rcfembles the fruit of the hip or wild rofe; but, when open, it is large and white : the fruit is at firfi green ; and when ripe, reddilh. It is a native of Virginia, &c. Toumefort calls it, Anapoqophyllum Canadenfe Morini. ' NYMPH 1.E A. T H E calyx is a large, coloured, and permanent perianthium, formed either of five or four leaves : the corolla confifis of a number of petals, ufually fifteen ; they are fmaller than the cup, and are inferted into the fi'de of the germen, in more than a fingle feries: the. fiamina are very numerous filaments, often not lefs than twenty; they are lhort, flatted, and crooked : the antherre are oblong, and grow to the fides of the fiamina : the germen is oval and large ; there is no fiyle: the fiigma is orbiculated, plane, peltato-feffile, and marked . with rays, crenated at the edge, and permanent : the fruit is a rude, oval, fleihy berry, drawn together at the neck, coronated at the top, and contains feveral cells, from ten to fifteen,_ which are fuU of pulp : the feeds are numerous and roundilh. · The calyx and corolla in this genus are very uncertain, in regard to number and figure. The Nymph:Ea of Boerhaave has the petals fmall, and five roundilh leaves to the cup: the Leuconympha'a, of the fame author, has the cup fcarce larger than the corolla, and confifiing of four oval leaves; and the Nelumbo of Tournefort has the pericarpium truncated with cells, containing lingle feeds, making their appearance at peculiar apertures in the dHk of the . fiigma.
