T lt ~ general umbel is very large, and multiple ; th~ part!alumbel plane : the general involucrum is deciduous, and formed of feveral leaves; the partial involucra are dimidiated outwardly, and confift of lineari-lanceolate leaves, from three to [even. in number; the exterior ones longer than the others ; the proper perianthium is fcarce vifihle: the general corolla is difform and radiated : the fingle flowers of the diik confift each of five equal petals; the fingle flowers of the radius confift of five petals, unequal in fize ; the ext€rior ones being larger and more bifid, oblong and uncinated. All the flowers have five fia trtina, longer than the· petals; the antherre are fmall : the germen is of a fubovate figure, and ftands under the cup; the fiyles are two, erect and ibort; the fiigmat:~~ fimpie : the fruit is elliptic, comprelfed and emarginated, and ftriated on each fide in the middle; the feeds are two, oval, compreifed, and foliaceous. In fome of the Heraclea, the flowe rs of the radius only are females and fertile, thofe of the diik ma.fes, fieri} or abort-ient : forrle are th roughout hermaphrodites, and the involucra are {ometimes wanting. This genus comprehends the Sphondylium of :ruthors. 1 . Heracleum Joliis pinnatis, folio/is quinis, intermediis fl.flilibus, jlori6us radiatis. T!Je pinnated-leaved Heradethn, with quinate leaves, and radiated }lowers. The root is two feet long, and three inches in diameter; the radical leaves are large, and formed of a multitude of fmall, cordated, and acuminated leaves, placed in a regular and very fingular quinate order; they are rigid, of a ftrong green, and a little hairy : the fialk is as thick as a child's arm, round, firiated, reddiib toward the bottom ; the leaves Olil itf like the radical ones, bot fmaller : the Urtibels are large and whi~e, tll.te feed br6-ad. The root is large and white ; the radical leaves very large, divided into a multitude of larger or fmaller fegments, of a greyHh green, all'd' hairy: the fialk is firiated, thick, and five feet high ; the umbels very broad : the flowers white ; the feeds large and broad. It is common in our meadows. C. Bauhine calls it, Sphondylium vulgare hirfutum; others fimply, Sphondylium. The other fpecies are, I. The ~reen-flowe'r'ed, quinate-leaved, Siberian Heracleum. 2.
