The Agroflis, with an extreamly long and fine ari.fta, growing from the exterior petal . The root of this fpecies confills of a number of long, whiti£h, crooked, and divaricated fibres. The fialk rifes to three or four feet in height; it is naturally of a yellowiili- green colour, but often reddi{}1. It is round, hollow, and jointed in two or three places. At every joint there !lands a fingle leaf, which furrounds the fialk a long way, and, when it leaves it, hangs down to a foot in length; it is narrow, and of a pale green colour; · at the_ top of the ftalk fiands a panicle a foot, or more, ]n length, compofed of very gloify flowers, ufually brown, fometimes yellow, fometimes of a fine purple. From the root there grow a great clufier of leaves of a deeper green colour than thofe on the ftalks, and a foot and half in length, This fpecies is not unfrequent with us in woods, and fometimes among corn, or even in meadows. C. Bauhine calls it, Gramen fegetum altiffimum panicula fparfa. J. Bauhine, Gramen capillatum. 2. Agro.ftis panicula oblong a, petalo exteriori baji villofo, ari.fta tort a calyce longiore. 'Ihe oblong, panicled Agrojlis, with the exterior petal hairy at the bafe, and with a crooked, long awn. The root of this fpedes confifis of a clufier of white fibres, very long, and fpread ing under the furface. From thefe rife a number of leaves a foot and half in length, and about half an inch in diameter, thin, and of a deep green colour. Among thefe rife feveral ftalks; they grow to four or five feet high, and are round, hollow, tender, and have three or four joints. At every joint there fiands a fingle leaf, which, at the bafe, furrounds the fialk for a great way, and, when it leaves it, is half an inch broad, and grows to eight or te~ inches in length ; a.t the top of the ftalk ftan?s a lo?g and large panicle, contraCl:ed mto the form of a fptke, of a brown, or purphlh-white, colour, and very gloify. From the m.iddl~ of the back of the exterior petal, there rife~ a fine crooked or twified awn, which IS fomewhat longer than the calyx. This fpecies is common in many parts of Europe, but lefs fo in England than elfewhere. I have met with it in fome of the woods in Leicefier£hire. Scheukzer calls it, Gramen avenaceum montanum panicula angufta et dilutiffima, fufco-albicante et pappofa. 3. Agro.ftis culmo repente Joliis radicali6us brevi ore, Jolii fopremi vagina ventricofa. The creeping-flalked Agrojlis, with leaves longer than the Jlalhs, and with a bellied vagina. The root of this fpecies is compofed of a clufier of moderately large fibres. From this grow a great number of leaves a foot and half in length, not half an inch broad, and of. a gloify green colour. Among thefe rife a great numbec of fialks, round, hollow, jointed, and not more than eight or ten inches in height. Each ftalk has two or three joints, and at every joint there ftands a fingle leaf, the bafe of which furrounds the fialk, and which is about three inches long, after it leaves it. The one or two under leaves form fimple vaginre round the fialk, like the other graifes; but the upper one is not a fimple, but an inflated, vagina, fwelling out into a kind of belly ; this is ufually of a whitifh green, fometimes purpliili. At the top of the fialk ftands a ihort and foft {pike, of a greeniili colour, and foft to the touch. This fpecies is very frequent in moft parts of Europe, but lefs fo in England than elfewhere. I have found it, in fome plenty, at the fide of Waa1ingley wood. Scheuk- 2er calls it, Gramen caninum fupinum minus. Parkinfon, Gramen caninum fupinum arvenfe. F f f L AGVR US. |
