The male is very fmall, and placed on the glume of the calyx of the female: the calyx of the male-flower is a bivalve, muticous glume, containing only one flower : the corolla is a bivalve, muticous glume, of the fize of the proper cup : the fiamina are three fhort, capillary filaments ; the anther::e are fimple .. The female flower is larger : it's calyx is a bivalve glume, contained w~thin a comn~on glume, with an intorted arifia within 0ne of the valves : the corolla IS a fmall, b1florous glume: the germen is oblong; the fiyles are two, and reflex : the feed is fingle, and involved in the calyces and corollce. Thefe are the char.atl:ers of the Ifchremum, or Schxnanthus, as Scheukzer defcribes it; but they are obfcure, and fome of them improbable : this is one of the plants, in which there wants much nicer examination. Of this genus there is but one known fpecies. I ·s c H .lE M u M· The roots are fmall, white, oblong, hard, woody, and fibrated : the radical leaves are numerous, four inches long, narrow, graffy, convoluted, and terminate in a !harp, robufi point; thefe are of a pale green, and furround one another, and the ftalk at the bafe : the fialk rifes to a foot high ; it is round, jointed, but that at confiderable difiances, and is not hollow, but full of .pith, like a rufh : the flowers are of a reddiili colour, and fiand in a fpiked form on the top of the fialk, arranged in two feries, in the manner of thofe of darnel : the whole plant is of a fragrant, aromatic finell. It is a native of Arabia. It has been in fome efi:eem in medicine as a cephalic and deobfiruent, but it is not much ufed at prefent. F I N I s.
