T HE calyx is an extremely fmall, obtufe perianthium, divided ~nto five parts: the corolla confifts of a fingle, infundibuliform petal; ~h~ tu~e IS long, and grows broader towards it's top : the limb is eretlo-patent, and dtvtded mto five oblong, o.val fegments, bent toward the right: the ftamina are ~ve fubulated filam~nts, growmg out of the middle of the tube: the antherre are. conmvent: the ge.rmen IS oblong ~n~ bifid ; there are fcarce any ftyles : the ftigma .1s double and acununated. The frUit ts compofed of two long, pointed, ventricofe folhcles, formed of a fingle valve each, and containing a fingle cell, and natu.rally ben~ing downwards, and nutant: the feeds ar~ num.erous, oblong, imbricated, and inferted mto a large, oval membrane, at the bafe. The feeds are numerous, oval, and imbricated, and inferted into a large, oval membrane at the bafe. It is an American, defcribed by Plumier. TABERNOMONTAN A. T HE perianthium is very fmall, divided into five parts, acute and connivent: the corolla confifts of a fingle, infundibuliform petal: the tube is cylindric and long; the bafe and apex of it are both ventricofe : the limb is divided into five linear, ob· tufe fegments: the fl:amina are five very fmall filaments, placed in the middl~ of the tube: the antherre are connivent: the germina are two, and fimple : the ftyle 1s fuh~· lated; the fiigmata are obfolete. The fruit is compofed of two follicles, bent honzontally, ventricofe and acuminated, formed of one valve, and containing one cell J the feeds are numerous, of an oblong, oval figure, obtufe, imbricated, and wrappe up in pulp. · It is common to America and to the Eafi Indies, and is defcribed by Plumier, and in the Hortus Malabaricus, 1. 46. CE R O PEGIA.· CEROPEGIA. T H E caiyx is a fmall, permanent perianthium, formed of a fingle leaf, divided into five lhort fegments at the end : the corolla confifis of a fingle petal : the bafe is large and globofe; the tube which terminates this is cylindric and long : the limb is very fmall, quinquedentated, acuminated with the tops of the fegments, connivent, and open at their fides : the ftamina are five fmall, crooked, connivent filaments, at the bottom of the corolla: the antherre are fmall; the germen is extreamly {mall; there is fcarce any fl:yle : the fl:igmata are two. The fruit is compofed of two cylindric and very long follicles, fl:rait, acuminated, formed each of one valve, and containing one cell: the feeds are oblong, numerous, imbricated, and crowned with down. It is a native of the Eafl: Indies, and is defcribed in the Hortus Malabaricus, g, 16. Clafi the Fifth. Order the Second. PENTANDRIA DIGYNIA. Some have only one feed after each flower. 3· Others have feveral feeds after each. 4· Some have two naked feeds and a fimple umbel. 5. Some have two naked feeds, and a univerfal and partial involucrum. 6. Some have two naked feeds, with only a partial involu-: crum. 7· Some have two naked feeds, and no involucrum. Clafs the Fifth. T H E calyx is a perianthium, formed of one leaf, divided into five fegments, acute, fmall, and permanent: the corolla <:onfifts of a fingle, large, plane petal, divided beyond the middle into five fegments, which are broad, plane, and acuminated: the netlarium is a plane, little fl:ar, of five points; the fegments are linear, their apices lacerated, and they furround the parts of fructification ; and there is alfo another plane, little fl:ar, of five acute, undivided rays, covering the fame parts : the ftamina are five plane, ereCt, broad filaments : the antherre are linear, and affixed each way to the fide of the filament : the germina are two, of an oval figure, and plane within : there are no fl:yles: the fl:igmata are obfolete. The fruit confifts of two oblong, fubulated follicles, formed of one valve, and containing one cell : the feeds are numerous, imbricated, compreffed, and pappofe: in fame fpecies there is a plane, orbicular body, placed under the fl:ars. Stapelia denticulis ramorum extroifztm prominulis. The Stapelia with the denticles of the branches prominent outwards. The root is compofed of four white fibres. The fl:alk is fucculent, of the thicknefs of a man's finger, and not more than eight or ten inches long, ufually procumbent, rometimes rifing obliquely; while young, green, but afterwards purple: it is divided mto a number of ramifications, and is of a kind of trigonal figure, denticulated, and the den tides riling into a kind of tubercles, armed with prickles; it is full of an acrid j uice, |
