T HE calyx is a permanent perianthium, compofed of four oval, patent leaves: the corolla confifts of four oblo~g petals! of an obverfely oval figure, patent, and twice as large as the cup: the ftamma are etght lhort, fimple filamen ts; the antherre are frnall ; the germen is turbinated, triquetrous, and obtufe ~ t.he ftyles are three lhort and filiform : the ftigmata are fimple and patent : the frmt ts a large triquetr~ us capfule, formed of three v,alves; and containing three cells : the feeds are fingle, ~md of an oval figure. . . . . . This genus comprehends the Senana and the Cururu of Plumter ; m the Senana, the cap,fule carries the feed at the bafe; in the Cururu, at the apex. They are Americans, defcribed by Plumier. CARDIOSPERMUM. T HE calyx is a permanent perianthium, compofed of four obtufe, hollow leaves, alterna~ely ~arger; the cor~lla c<;mfifl:s of .four petals, obtufe, but terminated by a kind of point'; they ft'and alternately with the larger leaves of the cup : the neClarium is very fmall, .anc;l furrounds tlle germen ; it is compofed of four leaves, narrow at the ungues, obtufe, and pointed at the extremities ; two of them form an ereCt lip : 'the Ll:amina are eight fubulated filaments, fcarce longer than the cup ; three of them ftand oppofite to three others, and the remaining two on the fide: the antherre are fmall: (the germen is triquetrous; the ftyles are three, and fhort; the fiigm~ta ar.e ,fimple : the fruit is a roundilh, trilobated, and inflated capfule ; it cont, ains three cells, and opens at the extremity : the feeds are fingle, globofe, and marked with a heart at the bafe. This genus comprehends the Corindum and Veficaria of au~hots. , , ~ . , There is only one known fpedes of it. C A R D I 0 S P E R M U M. \ The root is large, thick, and fibrated; the fialks are weak, fl.ender, ftriated, and fopport themfelves bymeans of any thing folid in their way; they grow to three feet long: the leaves are divided into fometimes three, fometimes five lobes ; thefe are oblong and ferrated : the flowers are large and white ': the fruit is inflated like the bladder of the w;nter cherry, and as . large 3:S a 'wa,lnut : the . feeds are large and black, the cordated fpot white.1 • • It is a native both of the Eafi and Weft Indies. This genus comprehends the Herba Paris of authors. 1. Paris foliis quaternis. The Jour-leaved Paris. }Verb '3truc~ lobe. The root is oblong, fl.ender, jointed, and creeping. The ftalk is round firm and fix or eight inches high. The ?umber of ~eaves on the fta.lk in this plant would no~ be enough to ch~racten~ e a dtffere?t fpe~u:s f~om the former.; but there a~e, befide thefe, fufficiently certam and obvwus d1ftmctmns: the root 1s fmall, creepm~, and reddi{h ; the t1:a1k very flender and weak; the leaves are never more than three; they are about three inches long, and three quarters of an inch in breadth, of a pale green, and even at the edges : the flower is fmall and white, and it's petals of an oval figure, and larger than the leaves of the cup : the ftamina alfo are only fix in number ; and' the petals of the flower, and all the other parts, a fourth lefs in number than in the other; {o that it almoft runs away from the very genus.
