The narrow, rough-leaved Arabis. E R Y S I M U M. T II E pod is columnar, and exaCtly fquare. This genus comprehends feveral of the Turritis's and Hefperis's of authors. Eryjimum jiliquis cauli apprejjis. The Eryjimum, with pods cloje to the .ftalk. The root is oblong, white, hard, and tortuous;. the leaves are three in~hes long, a.n inch broad, deeply finuated, and of a duiky greytili-green : the .fialks ate robuft, ngid, round, 'and two feet high; the flowers. are fmall and yellow; the pods ~and halfway down the ftalks, in form of a thin fptke; they are ihort, and are applied clofe to the ftalk. It is common by way-fides. C. Bauhine calls it, Eryfimum vulgare. · The other fpecies are, r. The fmooth, broad-leaved Eryfir:n~m. 2. T U, R R I T I S. T HE pod is extreamly long, and of an angular figure: the calyx and corolla are ereCt. Turritis Joliis omnibus dentatis hf!pidis, caulinis amplexicaulibus. Tbe Turritis, with all the leaves dentated and rough, thoje on the Jlalk furrounding it. The root is white, oblong, and £lender; the radical leaves are oblong, narrow, finuated, and hairy : the fialk is flender, but robuft, round, and a foot high: the leaves furround it at their bafes; they are rough, oblong, narrow, and dentated: the flowers are fmall and white ; the pods very long. It is common in dry places. C. Bauhine calls it, Turritis minor. The other fpecies are, 1. The fimple-ftalked, lanceolated-leaved Turritis, or common Tower-muftard. 2. The fuccory-leaved and perfoliate Turritis. 3· The ramofe Tun·itis. 4· The divided-leaved, larger-flowered Turritis. S I S Y M B R I U M. The root is fibrous ; the fialk is llen,der and procumbent : the leaves are three inches long, compofed of three pr four pairs of ihort and broad pinn.e, with an odd -one at the end : the flowers are fmall and white . . It is commoo about ditch-fides. C. Bauhine calls it, Nail:urtium aquaticum vulgare. . The other fpecies are, I. The radi01-leaved, fhort-podded Sifymbrium; 2. The Sifymbrium, with the lower. leaves capillaceous, the reft pinnatifid. 3· The little-flowered Sifyfl?brium, with ferrated pinnul<£. 4· The wormwood-leaved Sifymbrium. 5· The Sifym~rium, callfd ~y authors five--leaved, yellow Rocket. 6. T HE four l?ng fiamit~a are bifurcated at their tops: the anther;E are only on one of the pomts. Th1s genus comprehends. the Crambe and the Rapiftrum of Tournefort. Crambe foliis cauleque fcabris. The Crambe, with the leaves and .flalk both rough. laounn4eabtil f!bartock. The root is oblong, thick, and white; the leaves are fix inches long, rounded at the extremity, and finuated about the edges : the ftalk is round, robuft, and firm ; it rifes to five feet high ; the flowers are very numerous, large, and white : the pod contains but one feed. It is a native of Spain. Morifon calls it, Rapifi:rum maximum rotundifolium monofpermon. The other fpecies are, r. The auriculated, acute-leaved Crambe. 2. T HE pod is of a lanceolated figure, and contains only one cell, in which is a fingle feed : the valves forming the pod are two, and are navicular in fhape. l.fatis foliis latioribus glaucis. The root is oblong and very t.hick ; the plant rifes to three feet high : the ftalk is round, rigid, thick, and branched: the leaves are broad, oblong, and very numerous; on the ftalk the flowers are very numerous, fmall, and yellow. It is cultivated in our fields for the ufe of dyers. C. Bauhine calls it, Ifatis fativa five latifolia. The other ipecies ar , I. The narrow-leaved, or wild Ifatis. 2. The dwarf, Por-tugal, narrow-leaved Ifatis. C L E 0 ME. T HERE arc three neetariferous glands in the flower, one at every fin us of the cup, the lowefi only excepted : all the petals are afcendent.
