The root is oblong and fibrated : the leaves are three inches long, ~arrow, finuated, and very rough to the touch: the plant rifes to a foot and a half high: the ftalks are ramofe, and thick-fet with leaves: the flowers are moderately large, and yellow, and .. are furrounded by an involucrum, which gives the whole greatly the appearance of the head of the carduus benediCl:us, but that it is fmaller. It is common by -ditch-fides. C. Bauhine calls it, Hierachium echioides capitulis cardui benedieti. The other fpecies are, 1. The rough, laciniated, Cretic Picris, called by moft authors a Sonchus. 2. The rough Picris, with large flowers, common about the edges of corn-fields. SCORZONERA. T HE receptacle is naked: the calyx is imbricated; the down is plumofe: the fquammre which form the cup have membranaceous edges. Scorzonera caule ramrfo, foliis amplexicaulibus integris undulatis. The 6ranched Scorzonera, with undivided, undulated, amplexicaule leaves. <I5~tat mt::: per' .s~g~ar.s. The root is oblong, white, and large: the plant rifes to three feet high: the ftalks are round, robuft, of a bluilh-green colour, and ramofe : the leaves are oblong, broad, of a firong green colour, undulated, but not divided at the edges: the flowers are large and yellow; they fiand at the extremities of very long branches : the root is efcu-. lent. It is a native of Spain. C. Bauhine calls it, Scorzonera latifolia finuata. The other fpecies of Scorzonera are, 1. The lower, broad-leaved Scorzonera. 2.
