The root is oblong and divaricated: the fialks are numerous, woody, and three feet high; they are round, of the thicknefs of one's little finger, and of a greyilh colour: the leaves are pinna ted; the pinnre are numerous and fmall: the flowers are fmalJ and fiand in clufters at the tops of the ftalks ; they are often reddifl1, and ofte~ merely white. It is a native of both the Eaft and Weft Indies. Morifon calls it, Anil, five Indigo Indica. . The preparation, called Indigo blue, is made from the juice of this herb. D A L E A. T HE corolla confiils of five petals, four of which are equal and ftrait; the fifth, or upper one, is very fmall : the pod contains a fingle feed. T HE calyx is a perianthium, compofed of three .reflexo-patent leaves; thefe are of an oval figure, hollow, and deciduous: the corolla confifis of five erecto-patent, concavo-galeated petals, each .of them armed with a bifid feta: the nectarium is of a campanulated figure, and eretl:o-patent; it is fmaller than the petals, and confifis of five ovato-lanceolate, connected leaves: the fiamina are fubulated filaments, of the .length of the netl:arium, on which they grow, in manner of rays; each of thefe is divided into five parts at the top, and on each there are five anthera~, covered with the hollowed petal : the germen is of an oval figure; the ftyle is fubulated, and of the length of the nectarium : the fiigma is fimple : the fruit is a woody cortex, of an unequal furface, with five ridges, and has feeds lodged in five feries, within it; thefe are numerous, flelhy, and nearly of an oval figure. This genus comprehends the Cacao of Tournefort, and the Guazuma of Plumier. The Cacao has an oblong, quinquangular pod, lengthened at each extremity.
