Show ,, 520 'The Hiflory of P L A N T S. THLA~PI. T HE pod is narrowefi at the bafe, and emarginated; the valves are navicular 1 the feeds numerous. This genus comprehends the Thlafpi and the Burfa pafioris of authors. Thlafpi Jiliculis orbiculatis, foliis oblongis dentatis glabris. The orbiculated-podded Tblqfpi, with oblong, finoo;h, den- . tated leaves. · · The root is oblong, fiender, white, and fibrated: the ftalk is round, ereCt, branched, and is ten inches high: the leaves fiand fingly on it, without pedicles; they are an inch long, half an inch broad, of a pale green colour, and notched at the edges : the flowers are tolerably large and white; the pods very large and broad. It is a native of our corn-fields. C. Bauhine calls it, Thlafpi arvenfe filiquis latis. It's feeds ihould be ufed in fame of the compofitions of the ihops, but thofe of the common garden Crefs are ufually fold in their fl:ead. The other fpecies ·are, I. The fagittated and dentated-leaved Thlafpi, called common Thlafpi. 2. The urnbellated Thlafpi. 3· The great and little perfoliate, field Tblafpi, for they are only varieties of the fame fpecies. 4· The hoary, fmaller-leaved Thlafpi. 5· The fhorter-leaved Thlafpi. 6. The narrow and thick-leaved Thlafpi. 7· The very narrow-leaved, clufiered Thlafpi. 8. The daify-leaved Thlafpi. 9· The common Ihepherd's- purfe; from the varieties of which have been made, by authors, many fpecies. I B E R I S. THE corolla is irregular; the two exterior petals are the larger. Iberis foliis lanceolatis acuminatis inferioribus ferratis. The lberis, with lanceolated and acuminated leaves, the lower ones ferrated. The root is oblong, thick, and white : the plant grows to a foot high : the fialks . are round and ramofe, large, and of a pale green colour; the leaves are oblong, pointed, and of a dufky green: the flow.~r.s are large, and of a beautiful red, fometimes white; they ftand in umbels, on the tops· of the fl:alks. It is a native of Crete; it is very common in our gardens. C. Bauhine calls it, Thlafpi umbellatum Creticum Iberidis folio. The other fpecies are, I. The lhrubby, leucoium-leaved Iberis. 2. The field Iberis, with umbellated flowers. 3· The narrow-leaved, purple, urnbellated Iberis. 4· The acute-leaved lberis.- BISCUTELLA. T HE pod is bilobous, rounded, arid cornprefio-plane: the ' leaves of t1le calyx are gibbous at the bafe. This genus comprehends the Thlafpidiurn of Tournefort and R ivinus.
