Of this genus there is but one known fpecie~. S T R A T I 0 T E s. The robt is compofed of a number of long and thick fibres; the plant floats on the furface of the water, and thefe defcend eight or ten inches from it, and have tufts of fibrils at their ends : the leaves are numerous, oblong, ferrated at the edges, and in fome degree prickly, and terminate in a point ; they refemble the leaves of aloes, but are not above four inches long : the flowers arife among thefe; they Hand on lhort pedicles, and are moderately large and white. It grows in fianding waters in Lincolnfhire, and fame other parts of E ngland. C. Bauhine calls it, Aloe palufl:ris; others, Militaris ai zoides, and Aloides. Clafs the Thirteenth. Order tbe Seventh. T HE calyx is a permanent perianthium, compofed of five large, coriaceous, roundifh, hollow leaves: the corolla confifl:s of five coriaceous, large, roundiD1, hollow petals: the O:amina are very numerou$ filaments, arranged together in a globular form: the anthem! are oblong and erect; the germina of the pifiil are about twenty in nu~b~r, of an ovato-o?Iong figure, and acuminated, compreffed, and connetl:ed on their mner fides : the fiigmata are large, of a lanceolated figure, plane on the outfide, permanent, and form a kind of fiar : the fi uit is roundiG1, and is ex ternally covered with a number of capfules equal to that of the fiigmata; thefe are oblong, and divided by a furrow ; within there is a large, columnar, pulpous receptacle : the feeds are numerous and very fmall. Of this genus there is but one known fpecies. D ILL E N I A. The root is brachiated ; the tree rifes to fifty feet high; the leaves are as large as thofe of our laurel, and refemble them in fhape : the flower is five inches jn diameter, whit~, and rweet-fcented ; the fruit is as large as an orange. S. and term!nate each in a fquamma of a lanceolated figure, ~nd have an acute angle from the mner fide, near the ba(e of the fquamma: the bale IS compreifed and acute. This genus comprehends the Tulipifera of authors. There is but one known fpecies of it. L I R I 0 D E N D R u M. The tree rifes to fixty or feventy feet high, and is very ramofe : the leaves are fou r or five inches long, three broad, <1nd divided into three parts, but with the middle part truncated, or as if cut off: the flowers are an inch and a half long, and an inch in diameter, of a beautiful mixture of a greeni!h, reddifl1, and whitifh, with [orne yellow, colour. The tree is a native of North America ; but it is common in our gardens. Catefuy calls it, Tulipifera; others, Tulipifera aceris folio, media lacinia vel uti abfci!fa. MAG N 0 L I A. T HE calyx is a deciduous perianthium, compofed of three oval, hollow leaves, refembling petals: the corolla confifis of nine oblong, hollow, obtufe petals, narroweft toward the bafe : the fiamina are very numerous, fhort, acuminated, compreffed filaments, inferted into the common receptacle of the piftils below the germina: the antherre are linear, and adhere on each fide to the edges of the filaments : the germina are numerous, of an ovate-oblong figure, and cannaliculated receptacle: the flyles are bent back and contorted; the ftigmata are h airy, and are placed longitudinally on the fiyles: the fruit is a firobilu s, of an oval figure, compofed of compreffed, roundilh, acute, fcarcely imbricated, but cluftered, capfules; they are fe:ffile, and each is formed of two valves, containing a fingle cell, and opening outwards: the feeds are fingle, and kidney-fl1aped, and hang by fi laments from the finu s's of the fquammre of the fruit. The root is brachiated ; the trunk covered with a pale brown bark : the le.aves are ten inches long, and four broad, firm, hard, and like thofe of our laurel : the flowers are five or fix inches in diameter, white, and very fragrant : the f):uit is of the bigne(s of an egg, with a great deal of a beautiful purple in it. It is a native of many parts of America; we hp.vc it in fame of our gardens. The other fpecies are, 1. The long-leaved Magnolia. 2. The n1ort-leaved M agnolia. U VARIA. T HE calyx is a fmall perianthium, compo(ed of three cor9ated, hollowed, pnd acuminated leaves: the corolla con,fiil:s of 41' ~rdated, feihle petals, thr,ee al~e;nately interior and fmaller; there are fcar<;e any vjfible fiamina, but the anthera! are extreamly numerous, and are placed on the fides of the germen : the germen is placed on a roundilh receptacle, and is itfelf of a roundin1 figure; there are -?o fiyles, but a number of obtufe fiigmata: the fruit is a very large berry, of a roundtlh, oval figure, covered with a fquammofe, punctated bark, and containing only one cell : the feeds are numerous, hard, of an oval, oblong figure, and are placed circularly.
