T HE calyx is a pe.rmanent perianthium, formed of a fihgle leaf, inflated, and divided into five fegments : the corolla confifis of five pefats; their ungues are of the lengrh of the cup, and narrow : ·the limb is plane; the braetere divided into two linear obtufe fegments: the ftamina are ten filaments, nearly-of the length of the corolla: the antherre are fimple : the germen is globofe; the fty~es are three, fimple nod patu~ Ious ; the ftigmata are fimple • the fruit is a fmall, globofeJ covered capfule, with on1y one cell, in which is a fingle kidney-!haped feed. · Of this genus there is only one known fpecies. · • D R y p I s. The root is oblong, flender, white, tough, and fibrated : the fialk is angular, erecr, jointed, and ramofe : the leaves ftand in pairs, and are oblong, narrow, deeply laciniated toward the bafe, and terminate in a long, narrow, prickly point; from the ala:: of all the leaves rife !hort branches, the tops of which have two O{ three flowers arranged into a kind of umbel, and furrounded with fpines; they are fmall and white. It IS a nattve of Italy and Germany. C. Bauhine calls it, Al'fine fcandens baccifera; others, Cucubalus. 2. Cucubalus calycibus fruElus globojis acuminatis, triginta jlriis, f oliis glabris. The fmooth-leaved Cucubalus, with· the ripe cup globofe, and marked rwitt5 thirty jlrite. It is a nauve of Spam, where 1t IS frequent m the corn-fields. C. The .fmooth, oval-cupped Cucubalus, with trilocular capfules. The root is oblong, white, and ~~ody; the fialk is round, jointed, fmooth, ra ... mofe, and two feet high : the leaves are large, of an oval figure, fmooth, though fometimes accidentally hairy; they fi:and two at a joint, and are of a pale blui!h-green colour : the flowers are moderately large and white; the cups inflated and ventricofe; their furface is reticulated, and the longitudinal ftrire large. It is common in our corn-fields. C. Bauhine calls it, Lychnis fylvefi:ris qure Ben album vulgo; others, Papaver fpumeum. The Lychnis maritima repens of C. Bauhine and others is only a variety of this fpecieSJ. 1 The other fpecies are, 1. The common wild, red 'Carbpion, or ted Lychnis. 2. T)1e common white Campion. ~· The uniflorous Campiot1. 4· The procumbent Lychnis, with great, ftriated cups. 5· The night-flowering Campioli. 6. The narrow-leaved Campion, with: firiated cups. 7· The quadrifoli£tte, Virginian Ly'chnis. All thefc, though generally called Lychnis's and Campions, are properly Cucubali. C'l S I L E N E. T HE calyx is a permanent p~rianthiulb, formed of a :iingle leaf, daviform, and divided into five fegments : th~ coroila con lifts qf five petals; their ungues are narrow, of the length of the · cup, and emargin~ted : the limb is plane, obtufe, and emarginated: the neCl:arium is compofed of two dentitles-, placed in the neck of each petal : the ftamina are ten fu\mlated filaments, alternately inferred into the ungues of the petals : the antherre are oblong; the germen is cylindric; the fiyles are either three or five; they are fimple, and longer than tbe fiamina; the fiigmata are bent : the fruit is cylindric and covered ; it is divided into as many cells as there are ftyles, and opens in five places at top : the fee~s are numer?us ~fld kidney-!haped. . This genus comprehends the Vtfcago of D1llenms, and many of the Lychms's of other authors. r. The root is oblong and white; the radical leaves are three inches long, an inch broad, and fomewhat hairy : the ftalk is round, hairy, infirm, and a fuot and half high: the leaves are like the radical ones, but fmaller, and ftand two at a joint: the flowers are very {mall and white, and their cups firiated ; they fiand alternately in the alee of the leaves, toward the top of the fialk. , It is a native of England. Ray calls it, Lychnis fylvefiris flore albo minimo. 2. Silene jloribus Ja.Jligiatis coronatis, Joliis juperioribus cordatis glabris. The JajJigiated and coronatedjlowered Silene, with the upper leaves cordateti. The root is oblong and white; the ftalk is fmooth, round, jointed, and ereCt, and has a vifcofity over the joints : the leaves are fmooth ; the lower ones oblong, the upper ones cordated : the flowers terminate the branches, and are moderately large and red. It is a native of France. C. Bauhine calls it, Lychnis vifcofa p\upurea Iatifolia l~vis. The |
