T HE calyx is a very finall, perman~nt perianthium, with tubercles underneath it ; there are two melliferous glandules under every fegment of the cup, excepting only one : the fegments are five, fo that in all th¢re are eight of thefe glandules : the corolla confifis of five .large, patent, orbiculated petals, crenated, and with oblong, linear ungues: the fiamma are ten very {mall filaments; the antherre are fimple; the germina are three; they are alated and grow together ; the ftyles are three, and fimple ; the frigmata are obtufe: the fruit confill:s of three capfules, running into long alre containing each only one cell, with little appendages at the fides, and not open : th~ feed is fingle, covered and dentated at the lateral margin. It is an American, defcribed by Plumier, and by Houfton under the name of a fpe- cies of Clematitis. TRIOPTERIS. T HE calyx is a very {mall, permanent perianthium, divided into five fegments: the corolla confias of fix feeming petals, oval, eretlo-patulous, equal, ~nd permanent, furrounded by three others, fmaller than themfelves, but equal to one another: the framina frand out of the petals, and are inferted into the receptacle ; they are ten capillary filaments, the exterior ones lhorter than the others: the antherre are fimple; the germen is trifid; the fiyles are three, fimple and ereCt; the fiigmata are obtufe; there is no pericarpium : the feeds are three, ereCt and carinated on the back ; each of them has externally, at it's bafe, an ala, and at it's apex two: thefe alre are what, in the flowering frate of the plant, appear to be petals, but they are not truly {uch. GARIDELLA. T H E calyx is a fmall, oblong, ereCt, acuminated perianthium, compofed of five leaves : the corolla has no petals; but there are five long, equal> bilabiated nectaria: the exterior lip fiands loweft, and is plane, and divided into two linear, oblong, obtufe fegments; the interior lip ftands higher, and is fhort and fimple : the fiamina are ten fubulated filaments, fhorter than the corolla; the antherre are ereCt and obtufe; the germina are three, oblong, compreffed, ereCt, and acuminated ; there are fcarce any fiyles : the frigmata are fimple: the fruit confifis of three oblong, compreffed, acuminated capfules, formed of two valves, with the interior future convex: the feeds are numerous and lhort. Of this genus there is only one fpecies. G A RID ELL A. The root is oblong, thick, and tough, but annual : the fialks are numerous, firait, fiender, ereCt, · and ramofe; the leaves frand alternately, and there are but few of them ; they are oblong, large, and divided into a multitude of fine ilender fegments : the flowers frand on the tops of the ramifications, and are large, and of a pale whitilh colour. It is a native of France. C. Bauhine calls it, Nigella Cretica folio freniculi. It's feeds are of a fragrant fmell. C H E R L ·E R I A. T HE calyx is a perianthium, compofed of five equal, lanceolated leaves : the corolla has properly no petals: the nectaria are five in number, roundilh and emarginated, very fmall, and placed in a circular direCtion : the framina are ten fubulated filaments the alternate ones affixed to the nettarium : the antherre are fimple ; the germen is oval; the ftyles are three, and bent back ; the frigmata are fimple: the fruit is a capfule of an ovated figure, formed of three valves, and containing three cells : the feeds are numerous, convex on one fide, and angulated on the other.
