Show 3889 Edwards- D 1910 BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Did you wear the life preservers? A Coming down through Cataract canyon, yes sir. Q Did you wear them below there? A We wore them when on the rive; never went on the river without the jackets on, for the protection in making portages and lining boats, if we fell we would have something to protect us from the rocks. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Go right ahead. A I think there was one or two bad rapids in -- I don't know what they call that dark canyon. Q Narrow canyon? A Narrow canyon, yes; there was one or two quite bad rapids in there that we had a little trouble with, nothing serious, but what we got through; but got pretty wet. Q What did you do with all those eight men? A Well, after we lost that boat we let them walk, where they could; we would ferry them across from one bank to the other, wherever they could get foothold, as we made progress down the river, until we finally came to this Narrow canyon. Then we had to take them part way through that, all eight men in the boat. That was at this point we found that " D. Julian, 3 May 1836". Q Mr. Edwards, had there been any record of that " D. |
