A In some instances, and in some not; that all depended on what that particular situation was; if we thought it was safe to line them without unloading them, we naturally got out of as much work as we could, and we didn't unload them. If we thought it was unsafe, we unloaded them, and portaged the loads down to where they could be loaded up again. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Did you ship enough water in a rapid to sink a boat? A No sir. Q How much water did your ship, usually? A In one case -- in one instance I purposely sent into the heavy waves free from rocks; and the photographer wanted to get a picture of a boat in big waves, so I went out in there. I didn't try it any more. Q How much free- board did you have? A About eighteen inches, but the boat filled with water, everything was swept out of it, practically, but myself, and the supplies which were under the canvas covers in the forward and rear compartments; but I succeeded then in getting -- two waves swept entirely over the boat and myself, tore away the canvas fenders we had built around the cock- pits |
