Q Just describe the progress of the Major Powell down the river. A This boat had been built originally for coal oil burning, and had been changed over after they got it over there, because didn't have any coal oil, to burn wood. We spent a good many hours of hard work cutting wood for that boat. We would run as far as we could with the load, then cut another load, and go on, and get as far as we could, same thing over and over; going down on the first trip we tried to mark the channel as near as we could, so when we came back we would have something to work on. Q What method did you adopt of marking that channel? A We would mark on the rocks the line of the turn, so we would tell about what direction to go, then mark them back the other way, and vice versa, whichever way we happened |
