Show 3795 Woodbury- D 1816 the mouth of the San Rafael river, which comes in from the right bank of the Green. There is one just below the railroad bridge, the Denver & Rio Grande bridge at Greenriver. The river spreads out. I think one or two of the boats scraped there. Some twelve or fourteen miles there was another one, where two or three of the boats landed. Rather swift water there, that splits around a gravel island. After you get off the sand there, there is fairly deep, narrow channel; the water is pretty swift there, take a pretty powerful boat of very light draft to get over it; in fact, we all hit out cars going along; shallow. We had some difficulty just below Double Bowknot; I think five of the boats were stuck on sandbars there; and at various places down the river we had some trouble; many places out oars touched the bottom in rowing; some places we would use the oar to sound it, and see whether we were shoaling up in the water or not. Q Could you tell by the use of the oars whether or not you were shoaling up? A When it hit the bottom. Q Did they hit the bottom? A Yes. Q Further on in that stretch of the river did you en-counter any sandbars? |
