Show 3830 Gerdine- D 1851 BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Photograph No. 260, in Exhibit 11 D, is that a correct representation of that boat, Mr. Gerdine? A Yes. Q Will you just describe the progress of that boat from Lees Ferry up to the mouth of Warm creek? A We unloaded the boat at Lees Ferry and placed it on a large truck and drove it overland from Lees Ferry to the upper part of what people locally call the dug way. Q The what? A The dug way; that is the descent from the mesa down into the canyon of the Colorado, a dug road along the slope. There we let the boat down with block and tackle to the water's edge. Q With reference to Lees Ferry, at what point did that boat enter the river? A Just below the Paria rapids I imagine about perhaps three miles below the mouth of Lees Ferry, two and a half to three miles below Lees Ferry. It was a gasoline propelled boat, and then the en-gine was started; there were several around; we were all very much interested in the boat; didn't know what it would do on the river; we started it more or less experimentally; there were several -- two or three of the government men -- two or three representatives of the Southern California Edison Company, the man in charge of the motor, and one or two others, I |
