Show 3764 Stone- D 1785 BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q About what size board was this skag -- it was made out of board, was it? A It was a piece of oak, as I recall it, two inches thick and about five inches in height at the stern, sloping down wedge- shape to almost nothing at the center of the boat, or practically at the center of the boat. Q It could be treated as a fan- shape center board -- A Yes, that was its purpose exactly, because in the quiescent stretches of the river we went down bow first; that kept the boat from swinging. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did your carry life preservers as part of your equipment? A Yes sir. Q What character of life preservers? A Cork, that would sustain a dead weight of eighty pounds. Q Will your describe your trip through Cataract canyon? A Well, it was one of rather continuous effort. The water is somewhat turbulent there, a great many rocks in the channel. At the head of practically every rapid,-- not all, but practically every rapid, at the head of the rapid is a quiescent pool. our method was to land on either one side |
