Q Do you recall whether or not a there was a post office in there? A I don't think there was a post office there; I think it was just volunteer mail,-- people traveling back and forth brought in. Q From Narrow canyon down to the place where you picked up that boat, just tell me about the operation of the boat. A It was characteristic river, that is, swift in places, riffles, and what we would call a small rapid. Q Did you encounter any sandbars or crossing bars? A No, I don't remember of encountering any that far up. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q You said it was impossible because of the shape of the boat to go down stern foremost through the rapids. What was the trouble? A A keel boat, what they call a round bottom keel boat, as long as you are going fast, you can steer them, like a motor boat with a round bottom, keel boat, you can steer them.
