A There again I might say I have taken a boat up a stream for maybe one hundred yards or so in an Eddy, but as far as making any progress up stream is concerned, I have not done that. Q These boats that came back empty after having taken down supplies, I understand they were towed back and rowed, and so forth? A Yes sir. Q Mr. Stone, when did you next see the Colorado river? A In the fall of 1909. Q At what point? A We started in with four boats at Green River, Wyoming, and proceeded down stream as far as Needles, California. Q What kind of boats did you have? Let's have the construction, draft, dimensions and so forth. A Those boats were built especially for that particular trip and were purposely built very light, of cork pine, five- eighths of an inch thick only, sixteen feet four inches long, four feet beam, and eighteen inches deep; they weighed about two hundred and forty- three pounds empty. Q How much water would they draw empty? A That would depend altogether on the load, but |
