Show 3831 Gerdine- D 1852 think seven or eight men were on that boat when we started up; just below Paria rapids there is quite a current comes in next to the bank on the east side. I recall distinctly the boat did not respond as it should; we went over next to the current, and we all jumped on one side to keep it away from the canyon walls; we very near capsized there, but we seemed to get quieted down; the boat made pretty good progress up to the foot of the falls -- I mean the foot of the rapids, Paria rapids. Q You are still below Lees Ferry? A Oh, yes. Q What distance was that, approximately? A We are just below Paria rapids now; we are in what would be called comparatively easy water, below the Paria rapids; we wanted to see if the boat would go up Paria rapids; we felt confident it would go up the stream; it wouldn't go up Paria rapids under its own power; we had to get out and help tow the boat through the greater part of the rapids, per-haps half way up the rapids. Then there wasn't water enough; it had shifted over towards the east bank of the river, and the man on the tow line pulling had to turn loose -- Mr. Cobb was the boat man in charge of the boat -- he got out, and with the assistance of Mr. Cobb lifting it over rocks and things of that kind, and its own power, we finally got it up over the rapids. |
