Show 3878 Edward- D 1899 A Yes. Q And on what river? A Not on any river; on Lake Ontario. Q Had you had any experience as a cook? A I had. I applied for a job as a cook; they already had a cook, that couldn't boil water without burning it, so I finally had to take the job over. Q From Tickaboo bar down to Lees Ferry did you have any difficulty in the operations of the boats? A No difficulty except on account of the extreme shallow water. We made one portage, I think about half a mile, on account of the gravelly, shallow water. Q Could you locate that portage approximately? A No, I don't think I could. My notes give the date, but it don't give the location. It is pretty hard for one at this time to give locations. All those points down there have been named since my time, and people ask me about certain locations, and I can't tell them, because there was so such name there at that time. We made our own named, as we went along. I should judge it was about half way, something like half way, between Dandy crossing and Lees Ferry. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Was this railroad to be located along the side of the be of the river? |
