Show 3762 Stone- D 1783 river, Utah, and the end of Labyrinth canyon. Q With particular attention to that stretch between Greenriver, Utah, and the mouth of the San Rafael, did you have any trouble with groundings in there that you recall? A As I now recall it, we probably were hung up on sand or mud bars maybe two or three times in there, but all those things were just inci9dents; there was no note made of them, at all; they were all in the day's work. Q Along through Labyrinth canyon did you experience any difficulty? A Yes, quite a good deal, from sandbars. Q What method did you use to get over those sandbars? A Sometimes got out and pulled the boat over, and others, where the bars were not filled with course gravel at all, I would rock the boat from one side to the other, that would loosen the mud up, and the current would take it away, and finally the boat would float off. Q From the end of Labyrinth canyon to the region of the cataracts, did you experience any groundings? A Possibly one or two times, but not very much. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Did the boat have rudders? A No sir, they were flat bottomed, your Honor, with a skag that could be detached, and in the more quiescent parts of the river we put on that skag to keep the boat from swinging too much, then we took that off in the swifter parts |
