A Some one hundred and fifty miles -- one hundred and forty, right at one of those rapids above that, I think, there were two of the boats grounded; two of us grounded at the mouth of the canyon; I don't know whether it is the Natural Bridge canyon, but it is the canyon that leads up to the Natural Bridge, above Lees Ferry. Q You mean Aztec canyon? A I don't know the name of it. It is the one through which the Natural Bridge is reached from the river. Q In that section of the river through Glen canyon did you encounter any sandbars? A We had some sandbars, yes; we lodged on several, different boats; had to get overboard to dislodge them, float them off. Q I may have misunderstood you. I thought you said at Bull Frog, that grounding there was on a riffle? A I think it was above Bull Frog; it wasn't right at the rapid. There was a sand island there, and the river spreads out quite wide; there are two or three riffles up through there, rather swift water, comes down over ledges. Q At any place below the Cataracts did you encounter a kind of braided channel? A That is where the river spreads out; it is always a braided channel; sometimes you go down one that looks a good |
