Show 3870 Gerdine- 1891 stream of that kind. Q It would give warning of rapids in the descent of the stream, but this sandbar business, I don't see why, if he knew these were exposed in July or August, and in September he came along -- this higher water period - I don't see why that wouldn't warn him that there was likely to be shallow water there, and to keep to the other side of the river. I understand thoroughly that there is evidence that these may shift and change, but at least he would be given warning that he better look out. MR. BLACKMAR: That is, it would amount to this, he would have reasonable cause to suspect there should be a sandbar -- or would be a sandbar. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Yes. And to that degree it seems to me, as a layman - I never navigated a boat down rivers to this time -- but just as a layman it would seem to me that maps of this kind must be of some assistance to a person coming down the river. THE WITNESS: The Colorado is an awfully muddy stream in the lower stretch, I don't know whether you could see the effect of that sandbar. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q I am not talking about seeing it, at all. I am merely talking about possible warning he might have that there |
