I wondered whether it was possible for people to go through places like that -- I mean a it is there pictured -- and live. Naturally I became interested in the whole problem from that time on. Q What year was it that you first saw the Colorado river? A Well, I got a distant view of it in 1878 from the Blue mountains in Colorado, but did not go down to the canyon then. I first saw the Colorado in the year 1897 -- 1898, I believe. Q At what point, Mr. Stone? A In Glen canyon. I went over there from Greenriver station, Utah, by way of Hanksville, where Mr. Stanton was engaged in locating placer claims, had a party of men in there. Q Were you interested in that enterprise? A Unfortunately, yes. Q were you an officer in that company? A Not that I know of -- not that I now recall. Q But you do recall you were a stockholder? A Yes.
