That year he was elected treasurer of the organization and he held that position until he retired in 1935. He lived in Washington D,C, during those years. In 1935 Wells retired to Salt Lake and was an editorial writer for the Deseret News. He died in 1938. Wells lived here until 1897, one year after he was elected governor. He then moved to 61 First Avenue. That house has been replaced by the Wells Apartments. After Heber M. Wells lived here, his brother, Joseph S. Wells lived in the house. Joseph was born May 25,1862 to Daniel H. and Martha Gwens Harris Wells. He married Anna Elizabeth Sears in March,1888. She was born Dec, 21,1864 to John Sears and Sarah Wagstaff Sears. She died in 1903. She had five shildren. In June 1907 Joseph married Mamie E. Lovell. She was born August 6,1884 to John E. and Harriet Lyman Lovell. Wells was employed as a bookkeeper with the Ogden branch of ZCMI and worked in the insurance office of Heber J, Grant and Company. In 1889 he became associated with the Utah Light and Railway Company and became secretary of the Salt Lake Railway Company. In 1891 he became Salt Lake Company*s secretary and treasurer. In 1901 he was appointed secretary and treasurer of Consolidated Railway and Power Company. In 1904 he became vice-president and cashier of the Utah Light and Railway Company and in 1906 he became general manager of that company. He later became Secretary-treasurer and a director of the company. Joseph was a member of the LDS Church. He served a mission to Great Britain in 1885-1887. He was a hone missionary in Salt Lake from 1887 to 1904. In 1904 he was chosen first counselor to President Richard W. Young of the Ensign Stake and he held that position until he died in 1916. In 1911 he became a member of the Church's auditing committee. He died October 18,1916, In 1909 Joseph S, Wells moved- from this house to 251 Second Avenue. Ole C.Hansen who,owned Salt Lake Tailoring Comp. bought the house. He lived at 232 "G* Street and rented this house. It has been rented since then. Ole C. Hansen owned much property in the Avenues and built several houses. |
