Show 911 3rd Avenue 1906 Architect/Builder: Building Type/Style: Building Materials: brick Description of physical appearance & significant architectural features: (Include additions, alterations, ancillary structures, and landscaping if applicable) This is a one-and-one-half story gambrel-roofed house with side dormer windows in a style popularly known as Dutch Colonial. The upper walls and soffits are now covered with aluminum siding, with a brick first story. The front porch has wooden balusters and Doric Columns. There is a curved east bay window with wood shingle siding, which is probably the same siding hidden under the aluminum above. -Thomas W. Houghton, one of a relatively few women who practiced medicine in Utah in the first half of the 20th century. The house was built in 1906 by realtor Adolph Richter (87 Q) for investment purposes. Upon its completion, his wife Lucy sold the property to Imogene J. Melville Imogene and her husband James A, field manager of Irrigated Lands Co., lived here only a couple of years then moved to 555 3rd and sold this property to Dr. Alice E. Houghton. She lived there until about 1957 then maintained the home as rental until her death in 1961. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, July 11, 1968, she graduated from the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery, Kirksville, Missouri, in 1900. She came to UtaH about 1905 and set up practice. For many years, she was associated professionally with Dr. Pearl Udall Nelson. Following her death in 1961, the owner as of the time of this research, John L. McReynolds, bought the house. He has been employed at Hill Air Force Base for twenty years. |
