Earlier he had established Grand, Odell and Company which dealt in wagons and machinery At one time Heber J. Grant also owned 90 percent of the stock of the 3a.lt Lake Herald. He also founded the Grant Soap Factory and: was a part owner of the Mojave Land and Cattle Company. In the 20th Century Heber J. Grant came to own much property in the Avenues of Salt Lake City. His invest ment company also financed many Avenues houses. Aside from his business affairs, Heber J. Grant was actively involved, in L.D.S. Church affairs. At the ageof 24, in 1880, he was selected to preside over the Tooele Stake. Two years later he was chosen as a church apostle. In 1901 he was called upon to open an L.D.S, Mission in Japan. After two years in Japan hewas sent to Europe to preside over the mission there. In 1906 he returned to Salt Lake City. In 1916 he succeeded. Francis M. Lyrnan as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. On November 23» 1918, four days after the death of President Joseph F. Smith, he was elected seventh president ofthe L.D.S, Church. President Grant had married Lucy Stringham in the newly completed St. George Temple on November 1, 1877. She was born inSalt Lake City in 18^8 to Briant and Lucy Ashby Stringham. Lucy Stringham was 19when she married 21 year old Heber J. Grant. The couple had five daughters and one son. Lucy Stringham Grant died in!893» On May 26, 1884, Heber J. Grant married Hulda August Winters (18561951)» She had one child of her own, but helped raise her husband's other children. Before her ma.rra.ige Augusta Grant was a school teacher, having graduated from the University of Utah. Emily Harris Wells, daughter of Daniel H. and Martha. Givens Harris Wells, was Heber J. Grant's third wife. She was born April 22, 1357, in Salt Lake City, One day after President Grant married Augusta Winters he took Emily Wells as his third wife. For the first six years of her marriage she lived "underground" life of a. polygamous wife, In 1891 Heber J. Grant bought her a house at 61 First Avenue. Later Emily lived at 79 C. She died after a long illness on May 25, 1908, Emily and Heber J. Grant were the parents of four daughters and one son, President Heber J, Grant's administration lasted, longer than that of any other L.D.S. Church president, except Brigham Young, From 1918 until his death on May 1, 1945» President Grant presided over the L.D.S. Church. He lived in this house while he was church president. His only surviving wife, Augusta. Grant resided here until her own death. The property transferee!, to Augusta Winters Grant in 1945 v/hen Heber J. Grant died. She lived here until her death in 1951. |
