Show S.L. TRIBUNE environmental writer Jim Wolff Air quality is the most critical issue facing Salt Lake County and is closely tied to transportation. drugs and lack of communications with legislators on revenue sources. City Councilwoman Nancy Pace: Revitalization of downtown is a real necessity and some clearcut successes like the Olympics would be wonderful. The Redevelopment Agency as a tool for revitalizing Salt Lake City is a big positive move forward. Economically we are on the brink of exciting things but .i t is a rural vs. urban issue and we need to communicate better with legislators. . Transportation is an issue - 1ight rail, not widenilng 1-15 is the best way for the valley to go. Our police protection is way down and our mild winter means that revenue from franchise tax on utilities is down. However the costs for road maintenance are also down. RESULTS OF NATIONAL PROGRAM PLANNING Twenty-seven people took the time to mail in the National Program survey - a terrific response! We were asked to rank in order our five top priorities and to give a brief statement about our number one issue. Here is what the Salt Lake LWV would like to see studied at the national level during the next biennium. 1. Reducing poverty: federal/state responsibilities and options The League of Women Voters of Sa 1t Lake be 1i eves the 1990 census data shou 1d be used to study the demographics and trends of poverty. The LWVUS should educate the public on the extent of poverty throughout the country and should work toward decreasing the defense budget and using the funds for job development, education of minorities, keeping children in school and unpregnant and should work toward state effort to understand and reduce poverty. Councilman Don Hale: The most pressing issues facing Salt Lake City are spouse abuse, child abuse, day care center regulation and the fight against drugs in our schools and neighborhoods, Mayor Palmer DePaul is through his assistant Lynn Zimmerman:· The immediate issues of concern are downtown redevelopment, the homeless - especially those who live under the viaducts because we can't get them into programs that would lead to productive lives, the arts and especially recognition of local artists, education - creating a liason between business, community and education, and athletics - the Olympics which we are up to hosting. Transportation, the development of light rail transit, is important to Salt Lake City.
