Show -- ---- supporters. Hazard areas are of high concern to Alta. Avalanche as well as earthquake prone areas should be mapped and should be available to anyone buying or building a home. Pub1ic safety is also a concern - police, fire, arson, j ai 1, gangs. A new program concerning code • for occupational safety in fire fighting is a concern because large cities can cope with the costs which go with such programs but sma 11 communities cannot. Alta supports hazardous waste bi 11s and the light rail transit system. LOCAL PROGRAM PLANNING As the League ce 1ebrates its 70th year and looks ahead to its program for the 1990-91 year, we asked the mayors of the incorporated areas of Salt Lake County as well as the three new members of the Salt Lake City Council what they consider the most critical issues facing their communities. Read what these officials had to say; think about the purpose of the League, the resources available (both human and monetary), and your interests. Then help formulate the study direction for the League for the coming year by attending the March unit meetings, or taking a brief moment to fil 1 out the questionaire at the end of this article and mailing it to the League office. BLUFFDALE - Mayor Lee Wanless: Bluff dale's greatest concern is learning to deal with expansion in a rural community. Per capita, it is the fastest growing community in the valley (871' growth last year). The West Valley highway and the high pressure gas line will benefit the community. Bluff dale has the potential of being a hub of Salt Lake and Utah Counties but getting the infrastructure started is a challenge. As a_small community it is wary of countywide government because it could get swallowed up. lnterlocal service agreements can be helpful but it is better to keep the present level of service unless it is economica11y feasible to combine with another agency. ALTA - Mayor Bill Levitt: The most pressing issue at Alta is the environment - protection of the watershed, masterplanning, extensive recycling and how to handle Jitter and littering. The community wants to plant additional trees and educate the young about the importance of protecting the environment. The Olympics concern A1ta. There is fear that there w i 11 be pressure to hold some Olympic events in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, in spite of the guarantees in the referendum. Also, the proposed Olympic theme " Preservation and Protect ion of the Environment" was enthusiastically supported but now seems to have fa 1len by the wayside. As part of the theme each country would send a scientist and there would be a meeting of the scientific community concerning the environment. This kind of meeting could help end the polarization between environmentalists and Olympic Salt Lake Voter -- DRAPER - Mayor Charles Hoffman: Revenue to provide services is the main concern of Draper. Al 1 avenues of finance have dried up and the legislature is tinkering with Redevelopment Agency funds this session as well as redistribution of gas tax. Draper supports the idea of a monorail to help solve the transportation problems of the valley. MIDVALE - Mayor Everett Dahl: The major -5- March 1990 |
