Show P'RES1DEN'J'S l£7'JE~ Summer is in full swing, the weather has been lovely, kids are out of school and family vacations are underway. I thought that summer was a time when League activities slowed down, but not so if you are the League office manager or president. I've begun to appreciate even more what presidents before me have done during the "off season" to keep League on its toes and in the know. Many issues and activities still need to be analyzed and organized. I hope I can manage until Nanette, my co-president returns from her family vacation. her dedicated volunteers. If you would like to spend some time under a sprawling shade tree, people watching, and registering voters, please call Jo at 262-8723. I did it last year and it was fun . PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS - We are also still looking for people interested in following or observing certain program areas. It is extremely important for League to be up to date in the areas of education, transportatio n, planning and zoning, and internationa l relations. However, we currently lack the "peoplepower" to track all these areas. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please give the League office a call at 272-8683. DEBATES - As many of you are aware, the National League office is considering Salt Lake City as one of their sites to stage a 1988 Presidential Debate. We were very pleased to host Vicki~ Harian, fr6m o~r Washington office, on June 2nd and 3rd as she toured the City's convention facilities and hotels. The Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau was very helpful in making Vickie's short time with us as productive as possible. I would also like to thank Gigi Brandt and Madge Fairbanks for their time and effort in assuring that Salt Lake will be a city that the National League office will want to consider _as a top contender for a debate site. We hope more information will be available to us in time for the September VOTER. LEAGUE MEMBERS ON THE MOVE Former State League President Lee _Brennan · was honored by the Utah Chapter of the American Society for Public Administrati on as their Outstanding Appointed Official for 1987. Dee Rowland was chosen as a participant in the League of Women Voters Education Fund National Security Training Conference held in mid-June in Washington, D.C. Also, Sheryl Gillilan was nominated by our State League to attend a social policy conference sponsored by National League in Washington, D~C. in mid-July. Its nice to know there are rewards for dedicated League members. VOTER RESITRATION - The KLCY Neighbor Fair is again being held July 24th at Liberty Park. This is a terrific opportunity for the League to register voters. Last year, over 200 people were registered through the efforts of Jo Stottern and Silt Like Voter Have a relaxing summer. That way you will be ready for all the exciting League acitivites that begin again in September! -1- Sum.m.er 108? |
