Show Visit The Soviet Union with the League of Women Voters The League of Women Voters of the United States, following a four year nationwide study of the broad subject of National Security ( including a whole year on the topic of US relations with developing countries), came up with the following position: Itinerary Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct 2 3 4 S 6-9 10 10-13 l3 13-16 16 17-20 21 22 23 Leningrad: The League trip will emphasize people to people contact. We hope to show the Soviets how the League is working to promote better relations between our two great countries and to influence the US government to stop the arms race. Further, we hope to learn more about their society, their hopes for the future and their attitudes about a multitude of mutual problems. We will bring what we learn back to our own neighborhoods. We will visit in homes, schools, churches and day-care centers. Leader Madeline Ingram has been a member of the League of Women Voters for 14 years and this is her founh trip to the Soviet Union. Madeline and her husband were members of the National Security Study Committee for four years and Madeline chaired the study for South San Mateo County League one of those years. She has served as a League chapter president, is a mother, grandmother and professional musician. At every tum one finds a palace, fortress, monument or canal. Indeed, history envelops this city of Peter the Great like a mantle. We will see the sites associated with the binh of the new Soviet state. We will also visit the deeply moving Piskarovskoye Cemetery where 471,000 victims of the Nazi invasion are burie.d. We will meet with Leningrad citiz.ens and professionals. You will have time to explore how they live their daily lives. Kiev: Founded in the 5th century, Kiev was the capital of the powerful ancient state of "Kiev an Rus" and rivale.d Constantinople in beauty and importance. We will visit SL Sophia Cathedral, built in 1307. We will walk through the Pechery Lavra and descend into thecatacombsoftheMonasteryoftheCaves. We will go to Babi Yar and learn of Kiev• s tragic occupation during \VWII, visit kindergartens and schools and join Kiev an friends for visits in their lovely city. Yerevan: Locate.din Armenia, Yerevan wasfom1de.din 782BC and isoneofthemostancient cities in the world. Its setting is theatrical: a split level city with its older center in the valley and the newer residential areas perche.d high on a pleateau some 1,500 feet above. Visible from almost every quadrant of the city are the icy peaks of Mt. Ararat, the Biblical landing of Noah's Ark across the border in Turkey. We will take the city tour, visit the Erebuni Museum in the remains of th e palace of the Uranu King Argishti I. as well as temples and fortress walls .which have survived. We will also see the rural f amtlands surrounding Yeveran where there are other ancient monuments of the past, including the 13th Century Geghard Monastery. Moscow: Centuries of history will come to life as we visit the capital of the USSR. See the elegance of Czarist Russia: SL Basil's Cathedral, the Kremlin-fortress of power for over 800 years, encircling the Assumption Cathedral with its golden domes; the Cathedral of the Annunciation and the Armory. Take the city tour, Kremlin tour, and visit the Danielov Monastery, Moscow Baptist Church, Pet Market, out-ofdoors private "art mart," Lenin's tomb and museums and enjoy visits in Soviet apartments.
