Show ttt wHi understand our specific need and put it into pe rs Rec ti ve with State and National. President's Letter I hope you all had a wonderiul holiday and are ready for a new and interesting year. I encourage you to give what you can and put it towards the area that means the most to you l As a public relations statement about the local Salt Lake League, I can't stress the importance of the gass roots level of our organization. We are the backbone of the organization and must remain financially stable. Nationally, we will be looking at a Presidential election without an incumbant, with a multitude of debates that should challenge our organization's basic roots. In Utah we will be looking at an incu mbant that has to deal with the tax dollar versus education and a diminishing economy. Locally we will be looking at school boundary lines and their implications. These are just a few of the issues that will make this year interesting and a sample of why it will be fun to be in the League of Women Voters. We want you to do what you feel comf ortable and comitted about. If local projects and public meetings don't meet your needs, we need to hear from you. In January we will participate with the state in advocacy at the state legislature. In May. your Salt Lake delegates will vote on national prog-am which will include • study and advocacy. Forgive me now, if my main topic is money. It seems to be my job again this year. The League has a multitude of functions, primarily to inform our membership about issues relating to Salt Lake County, whether it is affected by national, state or local governments. In order to provide this service. we have an active volunteer board that I feel is successful in keeping the membership up-to-date about issues and action. The League is a wonderful organization, that originated with the purpose of educating voters. Our first priority is that you: (1) vote, (2) that it is an informed vote, and (3) you are willing to pay for the service of issue education and advocacy at all three levels. We hope you enjoy this year. It has been my assigned role as co-president to find extra funds for this organization, which is a healthy request considering that we operate as a non-profit organization with volunteer woman power. I am taking my job quite seriously because I believe our community needs the type of information the League provides. Several projects have been developed to raise funds. You will receive financial requests from a variety of different approaches. I encourage you to pick your major area of interest and support it financially. 130 All three levels of the League are seeking financing: National, i.e. debates; State, i.e. advocacy; Local, issue orientation. The local league has developed the policy of open market - we are going to 1ry for it all. Hopefully the membership of the Salt Lake League will understand our need and pick their area of interest without pressure. It is our hope that you, as a member SaltLakeVoter LYLA FULLER Realtor Associate 266-0075 Res. 278-2777 - 1- Office January 1988 |
