Order your catalog today. - Sheryl Gillilan While much information has been brought to our attention abou the necessity and benefits of recycling, information about the need to purchase recycled products has been scarce. The issue is simple business economics: recycled materials are not worth anything unless they can be sold to a manufacturer and transformed into a useful product which the public will buy. If recycled materials cannot be sold, they become separated garbage and may actually end up in a landfil,I all neatly divided but unused This half of the recycling story is commonly referred to as market development -- i.e., establis~ing a network of reliable markets for materials that are separated and collected for recycling. It is of great concern to private recycling companies, and is becoming a big issue for municipalities which have mandatory recycling programs. For example, in the eastern U.S., so many cities mandated recycling that they flooded the market with newspaper that manufacturers could not absorb. Consequently, the price of old newspaper plummeted, and in some cases recycling companies began charging customers to take newspaper off their hands. P.S. Good News! The legislature just passed a bill sponsored by Beverly White that will require the purchase of a percentage of recycled paper by public procurement units in Utah. Often perceived as being lower grade, recycled paper is actually equal in quality to virgin paper. Gone are the days of brown paper bag paper; recycled paper is available in all qualities and cannot really be distinguished from virgin paper. Also, making recycled paper is significantly less hard on the environment. For example, air pollution is 74% less and water pollution is reduced by 35% compared to virgin paper production.
