Show TAX INITIATIVES EFFECTS ON LOCAL DISTRICTS I have attended meetings in Granite School District and Salt Lake School District where the effects of tax rollback initiatives have been discussed. In the Granite District, a district worksheet was distributed ~hich asked the reader to come up with at least $20 million savings. In the reduction or elimination of instructional programs, the following savings were noted. Elimination of the following programs and their savings: In In In In $1,210,000 Driver Education and Elementary Music 210,000 Gifted and Talented Kindergarten 2,760,000 3,430,000 50% Reduction in Vocational Education 1,140,000 10% Reduction in Special Education 140,000 per school Close 4-5 schools (side effect of loss of kindergarten) 140,000 per school Double Sessions Instead of Year Round the areas of instructional staff and services, the following can be reduced: Increase Class Size by 5 Students $7,400,000 4,000,000 Shorten School Contracts by 2 Weeks 1,680,000 Replace Media Coordinators with Aides Drop Career Ladder Performance Bonus & Job Enlargement 3,000,000 3,000,000 Drop 6 1/2 Career Ladder Days the areas of Administrative staff and services, the following can be eliminated: Reduce District Office Staff by 20 $ 700,000 Reduce Administrative Contracts by 2 weeks 320,000 Eliminate 1 Assist. Principal at each High School 310,000 Eliminate Assist. Principals at all Jr. Highs 490,000 Eliminate all Elementary Assist. Principals 180,000 the areas of student services and support services: Reduction of Elementary Counseling Services $ 250,000 Reduce 1 Counselor per High School 270,000 Eliminate Busing of Elementary Students 11/2 miles 250,000 Eliminate Custodial Sweeps & 1 Custodian per HS 1,500,000 Eliminate Busing for Field Trips, Athletics 200,000 Eliminate Lunch-time Playground Aides 250,000 No Substitute Teachers, Use PTA Volunteers 1,000,000 1/3 Reduction in Maintenance Services 1,600,000 Postpone all Capital Projects Except for Safety 1,000,000 Reduce all Secretarial & Classified Workers by 2 Weeks 660,000 the area of community services, the following are possible: Eliminate Extracurricular Programs & Competitve Athletics $ 550,000 Discontinue all Adult & Community School Programs (except those funded by tuitions) 1,800,000 When patrons try to reach $20 million in reductions, the extent of the cutbacks becomes much clearer. --Gigi Brandt Salt Lake Voter - 3 - October 1988 |
